I tend to reach for Golden Axe II over it since the actual gameplay is more polished. Having a back attack changes everything and the overall hit detection just seems more solid but that might be my imagination.
I thought the original Axe had a back attack. One hit knockdown. And Axe was better, IMO, than Double Dragon. DD introduced some really interesting mechanics, but the hit detection was very questionable, as was the jumping.
It does. You hit B&C together. Gilius Thunderhead does a backwards roll.

Barbarian and Tyris just twirl their swords over their head for a split second and then chop it down behind them. Sometimes it's more effective to turn your back on the enemy and back-attack them repeatedly to kill them than taking them head-on.
