I've also noticed that the background music seems to come and go, it isn't playing all the time especially when travelling from location to location. I don't know if this is normal for the Sega CD version or not. The disc looks really nice except for a few concentric scratches in one spot about the size of my little finger fingernail. Also, when I have verbal responses to make and the choices are too many to fit on one screen, making a choice is VERY tedious and slow and takes multiple pushes of the D-pad. I'm using a ver. 1 Genesis and SCD1 but those are what was out when the game was issued. I guess I could try it in my CDX to see if anything works better. I also have a SCD2 I bought new which works just great. I did have to replace the fuse on the $10 SCD1 I'm using so maybe it has other hidden abuse related damage. I also plan to have the disc resufaced to see if that helps. The game never locks up or crashes, it's just the issues mentioned above.

The sound issue kind of sucks too because when I do get background music it sounds pretty good.

Not to give away to much but you have to add something to the meat for the dogs. Now if you have wandered through the fork you should have seen something edible.

Heh. I don't know if the music is good on the Amiga version, but it's very good on the PC.

Has anyone compared both?

Yeah i tried it and the music is good on the amiga version and it holds up remarkably well to the cd version. Graphically though it's similar to the pc floppy version wich is not as nice looking as the later cd version for the pc.

Load times however are not as good since you'd need to emulate floppies and while the floppy speed can be increased it's not always reliable.

So i'm not sure if i'd recomend the amiga verison over the pc floppy one. but i would recomend at least checking it out through emulation. But if you actually have an amiga and floppies of monkey island hook it up just for the heck of it. I would but alas i don't have monkey island for the amiga.

Somewhere in my collection, i have a PC gamer disk that was put out around 2001-2002 that had 12 full retro games, including Monkey Island, Duke Nukem II, Terminal Velocity, and a few other sweet games. I pulled my hair out for a few weeks playing this game, but i finished it and i have to say it is totally worth it.

edit: i found this disk on ebay. I REALLY need to track mine down! I have all my disks from like 5 years of pc gamer in a cd binder, except for this disk.

"Escape from Monkey Island" is actually the fourth in the series.

If you've ever played and enjoyed a graphic adventure, or think that you might enjoy one, paying $3 for the game is not a bad move at all. I've only played it on PC, but I'm sure the XBox port is decent. You would probably enjoy it more if you can play them all in order, but it should stand pretty well on its own.

Even if you get the game and find it completely frustrating, you can have a good time just sitting down with a walkthrough from the internet and enjoying the comedy.

Alright, so I JUST beat the game! I took me a while, but I did it. And truthfully, I needed to consult the guide a handful of times once I finally made it to Monkey Island. But it was a blast and I'm glad I stuck it out to the end!

Congrats!
I really don't know how someone could beat the thing without looking tips up at least once or twice. Most of the time when you do look something up it's like "I would have never figured that out on my own!" :)

Back in the day there weren't that many guides around (no easy access via internet) and people often had plenty of time for a single game (no easy access to freeware, like web flash games, we were young and couldn't buy many games etc.). You have to contextualize. Monkey Island in particular isn't harsh as you won't die from trying stupid things, so even on those "I wouldn't figure it out" there is trial and error. Unless I'm forgetting something, I helped someone finish it without either of us consulting a guide.

That said, making that "potion" / "recipe" is a riot...

Good job, noiseredux. I always found graphic adventure games to be pretty rewarding to finish. When I was younger and I finished one, I would usually play the whole thing again the next day so that I could see the whole story in one sitting instead of spread out over weeks.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned on the board yet, but there is a pretty large amount of overlap between the Monkey Island games and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. You see crap all the time on YouTube, etc. where people make Monkey Island trailers using Pirates of the Caribbean clips.

Now, I've only ridden the ride at Disney World since the movies came out and they updated it by sticking a few Jack Sparrows in it. So I don't have a good basis of information.

So, what influenced what? Was Monkey Island inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, or were the games and movies all inspired directly by old-fashioned pirate-story tropes? After all, Monkey Island is a series of humor games, and a common form of humor is parody, even if the intended audience won't get it.
