Honestly, I noticed this, but I'm pretty sure Metallica albums are always like this. They've never been audio benchmarks or anything. I'm fine with that, as long as the music itself is good. This is interesting though.
Another thing I noticed were some blatently obvious studio edits in one song, perhaps others. That's kind of inexcusable.

It sounds like the studio engineers who mixed this were fucking rookies. I could do a better job in my sleep. It's like the last album. Just sounded like the studio engineer phoned it in. Got the guy who was in on an internship to mix the fucking thing. The amount of compression on this album is awful. I've heard better demos from myspace bands. I even think some my students could have done a better job.
