See for me so far the way to spot griefers goes like this: can you see another boat? If yes they're a griefer. If no you're okay.

I know playing on my own puts me at a massive disadvantage but if co-op is so key why even make it an option? Rare can't have their cake and eat it too. You either design a game that is 100% co-op or allow solo players some wiggle room to avoid conflict.

The game in its current state most certainly does reward bad behaviour. It literally rewards aggressive players with the loot from other players quests. There is zero punishment for continually killing and spawn killing people and sinking their ships. None.

As to the NPC galleon, I wasn't imagining like a player galleon, more a moving loot point. It randomly spawns in an area and slowly moves in a circle and had a crew of skeletons. Maybe add a ghost ship that only appears during storms or whatever. If that is beyond Rare's ken then that is pretty pathetic really.

Anyway, I'm done even attempting this game solo for the time being. I just wanted to get a hour or so of treasure hunting in this morning and literally the first guy I saw sunk my ship while I was on shore fighting skeletons and sailed off. Waste of my time, waste of his, just boring and pointless.

That sucks that you are going through those experiences. I have never once had that experience so I must just be lucky. I hope future endeavors work better towards your favor!

So I haven't had too much time to play, but was able snag 30-45 minutes of play last night. Flew solo because I was on baby duty and she could get up on a moments notice, so I went mission free and just explored. What I found was a treasure trove of adventure in a small package.

On my first island I landed on there were 2 messages in a bottle with missions on islands I planned to explore. So I did so. On my way there, I got 2 chicken cages and 1 pig cage which I was able to use at my final locale, gathering up 2 captains chests (worth about 1000 gold each) and grabbing chickens and pigs for the venture back.

I drop off my loot and decide to clean out some of my purchased missions and do one. As I do that I see a sloop in the distance dropping of loot at the outpost. I leave them be, but as I load my last chest onto my ship, I see them making a B-line to me. The chase was on. I drop my last chest by the helm as I scurry to set sail and take off.

They are driving erratically to get a good angle on me and hit me multiple times... Oh this is bad. They had great aim and were good drivers so they had the advantage. I had to think fast. I turn to get the wind in my sails, repair my ship and decide to ditch the treasure. If I can't have it no one can. I drop my stored treasure chests into the sea and keep sailing to get some distance between me and the chests before I let them know.

As the approach I yell out, " Dude, I ditched my cargo a while back. You ain't getting shit." They stop and are cursing and decide to scuttle their ship (intentionally sink your ship to spawn somewhere else on the map with a fresh restock of supplies.) I laugh as I watch them and turn back to the helm and realize... that last chest I got was still at the helm. I forgot to dump it. HA!

So I sail back to the outpost and drop the chest off. Sure I lost two chests, but they were about 50-100 gold a piece. Not a big loss.

Yesterday my wife said out of the blue "I know you're not really into pirate stuff, but this Sea Of Thieves games sounds fun." I half-shrugged/half-nodded.

10 bucks to try it for a month. May be the exact price point you need to see if it is worth your time and experience! Again... nor saying the game is for everyone and neither am I trying to tell you that you will love it. For me it is a dream game, but I do recognize (but wholeheartedly disagree) with the lack of content argument in the game.

If you do give it a shot, let me know. Blu just got it, I'm always down and we can galleon it up!

If a non-n00b wants my Black Dog Pack pre-order code, post here. I'm not using it as I don't have an interest in the game, so it should go to someone who'll use it. Has to redeem immediately because it expires tomorrow.

That's not a bad point. Though I've been pretty busy lately, and have an overabundance of games to play right now anyway, so I'd probably wait until I had the time/focus to devote to it for a month.

Oh for sure! Whenever you do, I'll be there to help ya get your sea legs! By that time too, there will probably be a ton more games in that program so if sea of thieves doesn't work out, you will definitely have more to play.

So I got to play for a bit last night and, as always, had an absolute blast. I was first paired with a new player who we were doing missions for. We see a galleon in the distance while we are on an island taking out some skeletons. As our fight continues I look up to see them barreling down on us. I yell to my crew mate that we gotta run. My crewmate makes it first and I am darting towards the ship screaming. "RAISE THE ANCHOR," Dodging snakes in my best Indiana Jones impression.

We get moving towards the nearby outpost, but they are right on out tail. I scream out to them, "Don't be puttin yer balls up ol' Betsy's rear! She be a virginal sort!!!!" Referring to Betsy our ship. You can hear the laughter of the galleon crew as they fire a few errant shots at us.

We have to come up with a plan.... And fast!!! As we near the outpost I tell my crewmate to drive close to shore, but make sure to aim us out to sea so we don't crash, grab a skull and we jump off to redeem our booty before taking the mermaid back to our boat and let the fight begin!!

I grab a skull and say, "Ready!?!?!" I hear my crewmate confirm and I leap off and I turn in the most valuable of skulls... But I don't see my crewmate anywhere. "Did you jump off the boat?!" Exclaims my crewmate. "YES!!! THAT WAS THE PLAN!! I ASKED IF YOU WERE READY AND YOU SAID YES!" He laughs and says, "I'll come back around." And nears... The galleon was giving him chase and I took the mermaid back to the boat, grabbed the skull and turned it in, only to see the galleon smash into the land... It was gonna be a land battle 4v2.

One jumps off the boat and I tell them we have no loot so let just get drunk and have a good time. He charges up a sword thrust. Bad move. I easily step out of the way, fire a pistol shot to his head and slash with my sword. 1 down. Another gets to shore, blunderbus in hand and fires from long range. Bad move. As he reloads I fire my pistol and slash away. 2 down. A third is in the water carrying an explosive barrel. Bad move. I shoot the barrel. 3 down. I climb aboard their ship wailing like a banshee and take down the fourth. Their crew is down. The others I took down respawned and quickly took me down. But I got em. They scuttle their ship and I crash. On to another match.

I am paired again with a new player who just started roughly an hour ago. I start putting him through his paces, showing him the tricks of the boat, what to do and what not to do. He had done his research with watching other streamers. I tell some jokes, act like a loon and we have a good time. As our missions start to take off, we grab a skull and a couple explosive barrels on a nearby island and as I am loading up the barrels I say, "we gotta look out for ships soon.. But they will be in for trouble." Not realizing that a regal galleon was parked right beside us!

I startle and they say they are friendly, but paranoia is all too much a monkey on my back. We talk, they all get on board and my heart is racing... if worse comes to worse, I shoot the explosive barrels and take them all with me! Treasure be damned!! In reality, they weren't lying. They were friendly. An audio bug happened where they could hear our ship clear as day on the other side of the map and heard my ramblings and though, "We gotta meet this guy!" So they came to say hi!

I ask them if they wanted to join up as a 6 man galleon and showed them the bounties for 5 skeletal captains on the same island... which is an absolutely insane task. They agree splitting the booty 3 for them, 2 for us and they get dibs on 1 of the highest rarity skulls in the lot.

We set sail and drunk and laugh and tell stories and explore shipwrecks for some booty. On the way to the island we see another sloop parked at an outpost. We park beside the boat, cram into his lower deck and play music together.... 5 of the 6 in jolly merriment. The player come aboard and almost pooped himself but we assured him we were friendly and to come a board for a 7 man galleon adventure!

He agreed and we set forth to the tiny island hoarding an army of skeletal warriors of all types. The battles were fast and furious and friendly fire was a concern but we managed to take them all down and sail back to turn in our loot, drink grog.... And be very very merry. It was an amazing time.

They were also super nice to follow me on twitch and plug my channel on their own streams. Couldn't have been a more cool group of people.

I found a chest of sorrow for the first time tonight. This thing periodically starts crying, and it fills your ship with water fast.

As soon as I figured out it did that I left it behind and took off for an outpost, because I had way too much other treasure to risk losing it. I went back for it afterward and was happy to find it was still there. I figured there was a chance it would disappear when the island loaded.

So I pointed my boat in the right direction before bringing the chest aboard and took off with it. I read online that you can hang off the ship's side ladders to prevent the water from collecting (as opposed to desperately bailing it out, again, it collects fast). This didn't work for me though, for whatever reason, and the ship ultimately sank. No biggie though, I was fairly close to the island and swam in with the chest, which cashed in for over 1300 gold. Not freaking bad.

Lost a ship, bought a shirt, seems fair.

If this game charged you every time you lost a ship though I'd be in trouble.
