The newer Ninja Gaiden games may technically be modern, but they are certainly of a philosophy more common in the olden days.
No argument that the original games aren't ace though, they certainly are. I say play em all! But if you are only going to play one, you may as well play the best action game ever made (aka Ninja Gaiden 2 360)
Agreed on skipping the arcade game though... and the SNES comp.. and the DOS ports... actually just play the NES trilogy, Black, and 2. And maybe the SMS port.

Bayonetta 2 is mos def top 5 of the genre for me, if not top 3. Its fantastic, and a huge improvement over its predecessor.
As good as it is, though, its not even remotely close to NG2. Not only the best in its genre, but one of the greatest games ever made. (360 only though, that Sigma port makes me angry just thinking about it! >=O)

Will have to play NG2 someday. I ordered it but I had all kinds of trouble for whatever reason buying any of the NG games on 360 or PS3. From wrong game sent to never arriving and arriving broken. So I just settle on Sigma 2. I have played Black back in 2006 tho.
