Is the Switch worth putting off getting a PS4?

There were tons of people who were out late at night in weird areas looking for Pokemon who were getting their phones jacked because they weren't paying attention to their surroundings. There was even a video of some guy livestreaming it when he got robbed in Central Park at midnight.

Not to get off topic, though, but I've seen kids and adults alike run into oncoming traffic eyes glued to the screen looking for Pokemon or darting without looking for a Charizard or something. Glad to see the fad die down.

I went out to buy a PS4 Pro the other day ($509 here) and realised that for the same price as a PS4 and a couple games I could get a second hand Wii U and a bunch of great games... But yeah, a Wii U isn't exactly a Switch. Honestly, right now the Switch seems like a massive rip in my opinion. The game library is pretty average at the moment (Cool games on the way, but they aren't here yet) and the cost of the hardware is a ripoff compared to the PS4 for like $50 ~ $100 extra (Australia tax, so maybe Switch is more reasonable wherever you are)...

I want a Switch and I'll probably get one eventually, but screw getting one at it's current price. I'm about to start a half decent job as well actually (Finally!) but even with money to blow I still can't justify the Switch at this point. And what the hell is up with some of the game prices for that console!? $80 for Bomberman? Fucking jip!

At the moment, I defintely couldn't justify getting a Switch if I didn't already have a PS4 and a gaming PC. At the end of the year, once Odyssey and Fire Emblem are out, it'll be a little more in the Switch's favor, but there are already so many PS4 games out there, I'd still be hard pressed to say a PS4 isn't a better purchase (at least at the US market's prices).

$80AUD is about $60 USD. That's about the same as the UK price of £45-50, which works out as about $85 Aussie dollars.

Australian prices, like UK prices, include tax. 10% for Australia and 20% for the UK. That means in reality, a more accurate comparison would be that the Aussie price is about $73 and the UK price about £42 - or about $55 USD each.

The US gets the cheapest prices worldwide by a decent margin from everything I've seen, but in reality all of the other major regions have games at pretty similar prices to each other

But then again, that's what I said about the PS3 and also never did get a WiiU.

No! PS4 wins. The Switch is just too expensive right now, not readily available, and the library is still too small.

Piece of advice. If you are not truly in love with the Sony ONLY franchises, don't bother. The One and PS4 game mostly come to the PC. If you put the price of the PS4 and One together you could get a superior computer that runs their stuff, and some of those so-called console exclusives on ONE hit the PC too since well...Microsoft.

The only player on the market with really unique games anymore is that Switch because the other two are just off the shelf PCs more or less in a branded covert package. It's kind of just pissing your money unless you must play Uncharted 4, God of War or something of the sort.

Both the consoles go for around $400 a piece, given you likely already have a decent screen, keyboard, speakers, mouse, etc -- you're just investing in a PC box and the guts. That console money would go a long further that way, plus the savings in games via weekly (and deep cut quarterly) sales on Steam would save you a ton of money and they'd look better anyway at the least.

Not anymore they don't. A non-Pro PS4's standard MSRP is $299, and it can frequently be found for less. Doubly so if you discount the cost of bundled games.
Amazon is currently selling the Uncharted 4 bundle system for $265 for example.

Similarly, an Xbox One S has a (starting) MSRP of $279 now, with a couple bundles available for that.

The effective cost for either system these days, brand new, is in the low/mid $200s. It's unlikely that a similarly priced PC will match the experience.


$400 is what a PS4 Pro costs, or will be most of the cost of a One X.


That being said, PC can often be a better route, though the up-front cost is higher (especially if you use a legit Windows license, etc). I think what tends to compare better is looking at console cost versus what it costs to bump up to a gaming-capable PC, since most people want (or have) a PC anyway.
If not that, then the more flexible platform and (typically) cheaper software over time also give it points.

Still, none of the consoles are a major investment. So even if it is just for exclusives or easy living room play, it's hard to call them not worth it IMO.

Well I was thinking more along two lines with that.

He seems to be perpetually broke or close, and he wanted both. If you figure you'll be buying games for it as well, they tend to cost more as well. Up front may cost a little bit more, but on the back end you'll get far more games for pennies to the dollar from a far wider set of years, lots more functionality, and it will last a lot longer with upgrades too without starting over from scratch.

That laptop I bought 2 1/2 years ago was so heavy handed on the GPU and room to double the RAM(16->32) and CPU (I have a mid tier i7 didn't want to drop 1K on a big one) I was thinking long term last me 5-10yrs before it can't hack it better than low/mid settings on stuff I'd care to mess with -- then start again.

Nier Automata is a recent case where it seems Square Enix has zero plans to patch the PC version. Sounds horrible. We're in an age where there is no consistency across any platforms now. You really have to research to see which has the best, or even a simple workable version of a game. Having a console can come in handy even if you have a beefy PC. Dishonored 2, Arkham Knight, etc...

It's not just Sony exclusives piled up on the PS4, but a large chunk of Japanese games as well across the PS3/PS4. Along with a lot of remasters from previously exclusive franchises. Not to mention all the limited run releases it's getting that I know a lot of people around here enjoy. I wouldn't dismiss the PS4 at this point so easily.

REPO makes it sound like he's only considering consoles and not a PC right now. If REPO wanted software, he easily went with the best choice right now.

I say this all as I continue to game more and more on my PC lately. I'm still very happy to have a PS4 and it will continue to get lots of use as well.

No you're right, today as it stands, if you want a mix of quality and quantity and never play on a PC but just a dedicated console PS4 (or a PS3 even better) is the only real answer. Switch in time could put itself there but being 3 months old there's only so many physical games for it to go around.
