I think a lot of the early FPS on PC are absolutely fantastic, however. I have a real appreciation for DOOM now, and Dark Forces is a spectacular game. I think Jedi Knight hasn't aged quite as well, though.

My favorite FPS, though, was always the Descent series. So good.

The light saber and force mechanics are what really hurt Jedi Knight for me. Dark Forces is still awesome though. If you haven't, give Outlaws a go sometime soon. It is amazing.

I still need to get around to Descent II and 3...

Yeah, I think I have that on GOG, so I really do need to give it a go.

No question it's the lightsaber junk that brings Jedi Knight down. That last battle was ridiculous. The shooting is actually better than Outcast by a large margin.

I still love Jedi Knight haha. I think it's my go to late 90's FPS over Half-Life 1 honestly... but yeah, the boss battles are really rough and basically sheer luck with the faulty light saber combat.

Half-Life 1 has aged decently enough I think, it's just a rare game that I've overplayed so I'm kind of bored of it now. Whenever I attempt to replay it thesedays I stop on the endless tram level.

Thief, Unreal Gold, and System Shock 2 are fantastic though.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned any of the sports games on ps1 or n64. No way can I play madden 2000 or any of the wwf games on the ps1 except for smackdown and even then it would take a little bit to get use to.
Wcw games are even worse than wwf. Try wcw nitro or thunder on ps1.
The only games I can still play is wcw revenge and no mercy and even that would take a bit in time to get use to again.
I'll tell you though the roster on wcw revenge is pure class. The amount of tag teams and the roster is pure legends

Well, some of those games referenced in those videos are actually RPGs, since they often used the first person view before it became more action-oriented. While they offer up some rudimentary design for the genre, they're still something I like to sit down with from time to time. The likes of Battlezone are also still highly playable.

Also Catacomb 3-D predates Wolf3D, and it's still quite playable. In fact I think the whole Catacomb series is worth checking out for any fans of old school FPS design.

Faceball 2000 - SNES
Zero Tolerance - Genesis. Zero Tolerance allowed two genesis's to be connected through a special cable for multiplayer:

I was OBSESSED with Zero Tolerance for a while, even though it kind of sucks gameplay-wise. Did anyone ever like, remake that in a DOOM engine or something?
