I do like that you at least get generous check points in the arcade versions. It's been a long time since I've played Super R-Type but apparently there weren't checkpoints there.
It's like if Hidetaka Miyazaki made a shmup. Slow paced, extremely brutal, very memory based, the most minor movements equal life or death, and the shield is too good.
(Mastering "The Force" and attaching and reattaching it rapidly and skillfully to take care of enemies in all directions feels so damn good when you can pull it off. I'll have to remember not to pick up so many speed power ups though.)
Yeah, R-Type is a very strange and intricate experience. I know what you mean about the speed power ups, too many can be a bad thing. I could probably master Super since I put a lot more time into it growing up. I definitely wouldn't argue much that it's any "easier" than these others. Think I'll try digging away at R-Types when I get home from work everyday for awhile haha.
Always been a bigger Gradius fan though. And Thunder Force is my favorite of the 2D shmups, I like how dying doesn't put you back and you respawn in place as long as you have the lives, just losing that power up you had while hit. They make up for this by making it a bit faster paced and more intense. But R-Type definitely feels like the one with the most brooding atmosphere and vibes of the three series haha...
