I do like that you at least get generous check points in the arcade versions. It's been a long time since I've played Super R-Type but apparently there weren't checkpoints there.

It's like if Hidetaka Miyazaki made a shmup. Slow paced, extremely brutal, very memory based, the most minor movements equal life or death, and the shield is too good.

(Mastering "The Force" and attaching and reattaching it rapidly and skillfully to take care of enemies in all directions feels so damn good when you can pull it off. I'll have to remember not to pick up so many speed power ups though.)

Yeah, R-Type is a very strange and intricate experience. I know what you mean about the speed power ups, too many can be a bad thing. I could probably master Super since I put a lot more time into it growing up. I definitely wouldn't argue much that it's any "easier" than these others. Think I'll try digging away at R-Types when I get home from work everyday for awhile haha.

Always been a bigger Gradius fan though. And Thunder Force is my favorite of the 2D shmups, I like how dying doesn't put you back and you respawn in place as long as you have the lives, just losing that power up you had while hit. They make up for this by making it a bit faster paced and more intense. But R-Type definitely feels like the one with the most brooding atmosphere and vibes of the three series haha...

I hate Stage 5 and I've always hated Stage 5. I learned a while back that speed kills, namely picking up too many speed ups. Three is sufficient.

Well, after what must have been my 30-something attempt at Stage 4's boss on R-Type II, I've decided that my mental health is not worth this game. I give up.

I guess I'll go back to the original R-Type. At least the first one had the good sense to have the boss fights end in a matter of seconds, all the bosses in R-Type II take what feels like hours.

Just passing this along, DotEmu's mobile version of R-TYPE II is free on Amazon Underground, so just in case you're looking for something to play from the series.

DocHauser - 252,100 - Stage 6 - Shmupmame 4.2

No-missed the first five stages, lost five lives in quick succession on Stage 6. Derp.

I think my previous best was reaching the Stage 6 boss without dying. It's not an easy stage to recover a run after losing a life. Actually, you could probably say that about any stage from Stage 4 onwards...

Nah, you don't qualify for God level unless you 2-ALL the game ;-)

On the other hand...

I finally spent some real time with this today. Yes, I'm slow (I'm still playing March's TR game!)

Thoughts:

Stage 1 - I've heard people say this is the only easy stage in the game, but actually had some issues with this one, especially the bit where you fly through a ring of enemies. I had a close call with the boss - he was right next to me about to crush me when I finally defeated him.

Stage 2 - This on the other hand was realy easy, mostly thanks to having the laser weapon the whole time - the enemies coming from the top and bottom were dead before hey could get close. The boss was super easy.

Stage 3 - This stage is awesome. It was also generally pretty easy, and would have been even easier if I hadn't died and lost the force early on my first attempt. Once you know what's going to shoot at you it's pretty easy. The boss is a little awkward to fight, but not difficult.

Stage 4- I got into game over hell here. With no speed ups and no force I couldn't progress very far into the stage at all, and this is where the run ended.

It's been pretty fun so far. I'm sure the difficulty gets mean in stages 5 and 6.

Where is the bonus SMS level hidden? I know you have to do something to access it, so I'm curious.

I got to do this again! I kept the pink laser for the entire game (better) and took far fewer speed ups. Stupid maze level.
