Always had perfect teeth growing up (I was in my early 30's before I even got a cavity and even then it was one small one that I couldn't even feel yet)... Even had my dentist look at my wisdom teeth and tell me they were coming in straight! Until mid/late 20's (forget my exact age) when I had an impacted wisdom tooth and no insurance :(

So I got just that one (lower left) removed since it was out of pocket. It sucked. I drove myself there and back, but I went back to my parent's house (about a 4 mile ride from where I had the tooth out) and by the time I got there the drugs were wearing off so it just hit me and I kinda went into shock I think. Fortunately, my mother decided to leave work early when I told her that I went to her house, so she got home like 5 minutes later and hooked me up with vicodin that she had kicking around, so I didn't have to get my own script filled.

Since then it's been suggested I get the others out -- upper left because (in theory) with no lower left for it to butt up against it will drop out of alignment, upper right because it never came in so it's hanging out sideways above some of my molars, and lower right because if the rest are going why not... but I haven't yet. I had the appointment scheduled, but then some family stuff came up so I cancelled it and just have never gotten back around to rescheduling it. I'm working on the "I'll do it when it becomes a problem" theory -- and I'll get all 3 removed when one of them becomes a problem. It may not be genius, but I'll survive.

My main problem now is the crazies want to shave down my jawbone. Basically mine is extra long so regardless of the hardware they put in there I will always have an under bite unless I let them go crazy and hack me up. Needless to say I'm never letting them do that. Also confirms that the dentist who put me in braces for over 2 years charging us probably 5k+ back in middle school was a complete quack. I tried to warn my parents about her, but they didn't believe me. I told them her diagnosis shifted from under bite to over bite every visit and her staff was working off picture cards and on more then one occasion put stuff on backwards by mistake :P. She also never wore gloves when shoving her hands in my mouth which grossed me out at least she washed her hands but come on gloves people.

Same family of doctors hacked off one of my grandmothers toes to "help her balance" I really hope they aren't practicing anymore :P .

If you go to see a healthcare professional and they touch any part of your body without gloves, you are not seeing a healthcare professional.

I took all 4 of mine out with local anesthesia last July, and it felt like hell the first day, especially the first 6 hours. I remember a lot of pain, bleeding and helplessness. My fiancée remembers a lot of talking, going into shock (I was freezing at one point while inside with the AC near 80 degrees) and confused moments. We both have different perceptions of time in the events that transpired after the surgery. A good time was had by all.

But in all seriousness, it was necessary, and because I was financially able, I stopped putting it off for years. Didn't like it, but I'm glad it's over with.

36. Haven't had mine out, apparently they are now encased in bone so getting them removed has a higher chance of creating issues than resolving anything. Now in a monitoring cycle where we get x-rays done every couple of years. If things go bad for me later, it's going to really suck... but maybe that's never going to be an issue.

I think, and take this with a grain of salt because I'm no expert, that it's the kind of operation where you are better "safe than sorry". If you are still young and have coverage that makes it very affordable, there doesn't seem to be much downside. Given what I know now, I would have taken them out at a younger age if given the option. At that moment in the past, I wouldn't have thought it worth doing though.

If you do choose to have any procedure done, don't tough things out and drive yourself home. Get someone you trust to be there and help out. That's not just being smart and taking care of yourself, it's making sure you don't inadvertently hurt others.

I had mine all taken out quite awhile back, sometime in middle school. I'm not even sure why, I think my dentist just noticed they were coming in so it was a precaution. It was an awful experience post-procedure. I think I'm terrible with anesthesia though, but I went home sick and was dragged to bed by my family and was then super sick for about a week after with a fever and everything. All the blood and cotton in the mouth didn't help.

What does worry me to this day though is that I had the top palette expander. Fast forward to now and I've been suffering TMJ issues that get worse by the year. I can't connect any other dots other than, did I seriously need some strange device messing with the alignment of my mouth? Who knows...
