Last year I binged watched the first two seasons of Matlock whilst simultaneously grinding through SMT: Soul Hackers. It's doable with the right kind of game.
Yeah, it can work. I've watched plenty of shows while grinding something or other in FFXI. Usually though, it's
only when doing something high on repetition and low on challenge. I have movies and thing that rewatch later and realize I don't remember half of due to the game becoming more involving while they were on, so I tend to keep that in mind when picking the show/movie. I don't tend to watch anything I want to fully appreciate.
Yep, exactly.
Moves and TV shows have a lot of subtleties that are hard to appreciate if you're only paying half attention to them. The way a shot is framed by the cinematographer, subtle/unspoken clues/actions by characters, blink-and-you'll miss it references scattered about, etc. When I play games while watching, I don't appreciate all of that stuff. It's not that watching shows/movies while gaming is difficult per se, it's just that you don't really get the full experience. I want to immerse myself. Or, hell, I've been watching Futurama lately, and it's amazing how many quick-hit jokes there are in the backgrounds.
Sports inherently have a lot of downtime, plus you're constantly getting instant replays of everything... it's hard to really miss anything. Plus, there are
so many games -- baseball, for example, has 162 games in a season -- that missing something here or there isn't a huge deal.
