How is your Game Gear gaming going?

I think it would be great to have a Game Gear and get some portable Sega gaming going, but GEEZ these things seem to require a lot of maintenance...

I think if you get the caps replaced then you're going to be good for a long time. I'm planning to have (both of) mine worked on.

I also figured our a decent solution for the battery issue. I figure if I get 12 rechargeable AA batteries, then I can always have a set charging and a set in use. Right?

Yeah, it's unfortunate that the console is so cheap, but will almost always require a capacitor replacement in order to function at 100%. So you spend ~$10-$20 on a Game Gear, and then the same price again just fixing it. I may either start selling recapped Game Gears, or a recap service here on the forums for a reasonable price. Not sure how much recapping I can personally stand, though, so I guess i'd just have to test the waters.

Yeah, I don't see why this wouldn't work. I don't have much experience with rechargable batteries, though. Someone needs to do a battery pack mod for this similar to what has been done with the Nomad battery pack. I recently got a game gear rechargeable battery pack from a unit I picked up, but not sure how well it works yet. I plan on doing the majority of my GG playing plugged into the wall for now

Because of ghudda, I might be joining the game gear family. He's fixing the capiciators on the game gear I got for 3.99 and hopefully he going to restore the Gameboy I got for 1.99.
If all goes well and I get this game gear and it looks and plays beautiful then I guess I'm going to have to give this some love than just place it on the shelf like I intended.
I'll look to see how cheap some carts are. If there dirt cheap like Atari then I might go in. If not then I'll just buy sonic and be happy with that

There used to be a slew of Sega handheld clones that replicated gamegear/master system but smaller with a modern LCD screen and twenty~ish games built in. These went by various names including "SEGA COLECO" (which makes very little sense) "Playpal," "Pocketgear," and "SEGA handheld" (which are generic enough to throw off a google search). They've been called every generic name except for gamegear. I'm thinking this was around 2006~ish. They stopped making these after at@games started making Genesis handhelds.

Anyway, if you should happen to come upon one of these in a drug store, consider it a cheap way to get a reliable gamegear with a modern LCD screen.

As I recall, there is no cartridge slot. The built-in games are the only games you get.

Edit: I seem to recall that these guys only need 2 AAA batteries, not six AA batteries. So, consider that an improvement.

You're in luck, like 90% of the Game Game library is under $10, most loose carts being under $5. The consoles dirt cheap and deserves more attention. I PM'd you about a couple of doubles I have laying around

Yeah, wow didn't know Coleco was into that sort of thing. It's even titled the "Coleco Sonic"

EDIT: apparently it would also output to the TV via composite video.
