Serious question.
Has any top down societal cultural conception ever been changed dramatically by activists shaming marginalized fictional representations in any artistic medium?
Because from what I recall this sort of thing takes marches and martyrs to change.

I don't think you can separate cultural critique from civic action, they are typically in symbiosis.Exhuminator wrote:Serious question.

Words and actions are not the same thing, and therefore do not accomplish the same thing.dsheinem wrote:I don't think you can separate cultural critique from civic action, they are typically in symbiosis.
When has cultural critique ever changed culture?

Raises awareness and can subtlely change atmosphere and general acceptance.Exhuminator wrote:Words and actions are not the same thing, and therefore do not accomplish the same thing.dsheinem wrote:I don't think you can separate cultural critique from civic action, they are typically in symbiosis.

Can you show me where this has distinctly been proven to have happened?Jmustang1968 wrote:Raises awareness and can subtlely change atmosphere and general acceptance.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with cultural critique. I generally have problems with the source, where those that are ostensibly supposed to cover news actually become activists. If you're an opinion anchor (which is what we should view gaming journalism as in most instances), then by all means, go for it. If you're a straight news reporter, activism within your work is not acceptable. Outside of it? Go for it. But if you're going with an opinion/activism slant, I like to see balance.
Can words prompt action? Certainly. Of course, we must be careful that the words prompting said action are actually true, that we're actually solving a genuine problem, and not in the process marginalizing another group of individuals for the sake of social justice.

Re: Joystiq is being shuttered
I think in cases where broad cultural change has occurred, cultural critique has led to action. So in that sense, critique has the ability to invoke change, but the change itself necessitates that action is taken. To frame it in other terms; this is the whole point of propaganda campaigns, to impose a prescribed structure on society by means of cultural critique.Exhuminator wrote:Words and actions are not the same thing, and therefore do not accomplish the same thing.

Nobody is critical. Nobody is critical. Nobody is critical. And then BAM! One day the culture just thinks and acts differently.
