At least it makes it a smaller loss when he goes. As for the pop culture jokes and such, I kind of roll my eyes at them, but it's a change from the normal RPG flair at the very least (even if outdated).
I intend to begin playing the PS1 version where I left off barely after receiving my quest from Quark) and play until I leave the continent, and then see if I'm still interested.
For the record, I consider the Sega CD version to be a different game (and just as awesome). Anyone playing that one?
