Just wrapped up Fatal Frame 2. Amazing stuff, sad ending but felt just right. I thought the story and connection to the characters was better in this one.

Instead of jumping into Fatal Frame 3, I thought I'd get back into Silent Hill with Origins. Seems decent enough so far.

Also I rarely do this... but I watched an entire run of Shattered Memories on youtube, lol. It just didn't look fun to actually play at all. I can't really say anything good about it either, but at least I saw what it was about. Origins seems like it'll be quite a bit cooler and more like the others.

So about how long did Fatal Frame 2 take you to beat? You seemed surprised at its length last time you posted. Did your thoughts change at all?

And are you playing the PS2 port of 0rigins? That's the one I have as well. I'm gonna warn you now, combat is relatively easy since you get so many powerful weapons, but there is an enemy type that looks like a floating headcage and casts a human shadow. DO NOT fight these. They will end you.

Actually yeah, the time creeped back up on me on Fatal Frame 2, I ended around 9 hours. So I'd say that's pretty awesome for a game like this. Although it does resort to some backtracking like the first game, it never felt as tedious. In the final chapters I actually made an effort to try and revisit just about every house to try and end the ghosts permanently. It definitely felt like the game had more unique ghosts than the first one too, a bit more interesting fights. Although those damn three kids... yikes haha.

The final boss was insanely cool too. I love how well this genre ages visually, probably thanks to the tricks with shadows/blacks. The final boss looked really good and crazy. It's aged very well visually.

Yup, going with Origins on the PS2. Barely got through the hospital, but hopefully it gets easier with more items and stuff. I keep hearing this one is more combat focused, eh... lol.

I guess I'll have to get around to playing it some time.

As for 0rigins, it was an attempt at making the combat more realistic but also easier, so Travis can use his bare hands to basically bare-knuckle box if he has to, though it's not as practical. My suggestion is to keep to the smaller one-handed weapons for the most part. Weapon durability is a problem, and some of the biggest ones break a whole lot faster than the little stuff, though you'll have plenty of things to wield by the end of the game. But some of the weaker weapons have much better durability than, say, the television sets or IV poles that you can find.

The one thing throwing me off is can you not beat enemies to a pulp when they're on the ground, like the originals? That was always essential to me in the other games to make sure they wouldn't get back up. And it just felt good beating those... things... until the stopped moving. lol

Honestly, I don't remember. I thought you could. It seems like a series staple, to make sure everything stays down.

So I finished Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. My previous statement a few posts back still holds true. I think it's less scary than The Dark Descent, but has a better horror story. It's marvelously good at building tension, but it's always held back by the fact that there are few threats to your character's life throughout the game. For awhile, I didn't even think you could die, whereas in The Dark Descent I spent much of my time cowering in a corner. A Machine for Pigs gets better and better as it goes along and was quite gripping in the final moments.

If you do this, I'd suggest starting with Penumbra, first to get a sense for the company's work, and second because I don't think Penumbra is nearly as scary as Amnesia. That's not to say Penumbra's ineffective(it is), it's just that Amnesia is much moreso. As for whether to do Amnesia or A Machine for Pigs first, that's up to you.

Just wrapped up Silent Hill Origins. Definitely giving this one a thumbs up! I almost want to put it on the same level as SH3, for being a bit longer and feeling like a complete game. I also liked being able to roam around Silent Hill itself again, even if it's mundane... that atmosphere is just so tense and it was something that stood out from SH1 and SH2 for me. So I kind of missed that in SH3, I mean it was there briefly, but it wasn't really open like the others. I'm also not sure what to think of the gags in SH3 and Heather (dying dying dying), think I said it earlier but it just felt like the game was mocking itself and it wasn't as serious as the others.

But SH3 still had the good quirky moments to it and some major standout moments, the Happy Birthday call, the hospital mirror room, etc... Origins was lacking a bit there. I think if it had maybe one or two other good weird characters and a few creative moments, it'd be awesome.

Glad Origins had really good music again too, unlike Shattered Memories. This one really stood out to me:

Definitely a fun run.

Fatal Frame 3 shall be next.
