How does it compare to the Genesis version? (I think that I have both...)

Well I would just play both.
I do think the Gen version is a little better though.

I adore the Genesis version.
I happen to think the graphics and sound are superior on the Genesis version (compared to the Snes, not necessarily the Turbo). There's also the hit detection issue, so...
Go Genesis Prof.

Ys III's soundtrack is pretty top tier regardless, though.

Too late.

I started the SNES version last night. The hit detection isn't great, but I am getting used to it.
In any event, I started the game...and got killed by a bug in the Tigray Quarry. In my frustration, I thought:
"Is this the same Adol that absolutely murdered Darm in Ys II? If so, what the hell happened to him? Did he and Dogi spend all of their time between Ys II and Ys III smoking pot and watching Adult Swim? And, what the hell happened to his awesome weapons and equipment? Did he pawn them all for drugs?"
After I recovered, I remembered that this was a Ys game and that I would have to do some power leveling...so...I leveled up to 80 HP, got some better armor, picked up the power ring, picked up the shield ring, and took out the first two bosses (i.e., Dulan and the lightning-shooting gargoyle). I then set off for the Ilvern Ruins...where I promptly died. I set my machine to power level, left it overnight, and I awoke this morning to 230 HP and enough money for the "banded" equipment and the broad sword. I purchased those and headed back for the Ilvern ruins, where I quickly dispatched a serpent of some sort to acquire the Fire Dragon Amulet.
I suspect that I will now move through the game pretty quickly before hitting a wall at the final dungeon.

Hitting the level cap halfway through (or sooner) the game is a smart idea.
Save often and reload if you get your ass beat.
The final dungeon isn't bad at all.... Dat final boss tho...

I love that the game has, basically, save states. Were it otherwise, I think it would be almost completely broken.
