Lack of transparencies are one reason for the status bar but another is the differences in resolution between the consoles like with Earthworm Jim.

The music is unfortunately the result of a hasty translation using GEMS, the godawful sound driver that Sega forced onto Western developers and the primary reason many people think all Genesis music sucks. It was occasionally used to good effect in games like Aladdin, but more often than not the results were lousy.

Japanese Genesis games often sound so much better because their custom built sound drivers were much more advanced than what Western developers had to work with. The SNES on the other hand was sample based to begin with so you had more uniform quality. There are some stand-out Western titles that didn't use GEMS like Jesper Kyd's work on Sub-Terrania and Adventures of Batman and Robin.

Wolf 3D: Still one of my favorite DOS era games today. I remember getting my hands on the special edition complete with hint book as a kid. It was a great hint book too with behind the scenes information and insight into PC game development of the time.

I must have poured through every secret nook and cranny, and there were a lot of them. I'll never forget taking down Hitler the first time. Even though there were three more episodes to go I felt like video games had nowhere to go from there. I mean I just killed freaking Hitler. In a robot suit. That was awesome.
i went into it really expecting to prefer the SNES radar, but the damn thing is so intrusive and switching it off and on means one more thing i have to worry about. i hadn't delved too far into the hardware of why the Genny's sound was so substandard, I'll have to read more into GEMS for future Genesis content and keep an eye out for highlights in the audio library. thanks for sharing!

Game vs Game 04 - Zombies Ate My Neighbors

History Bytes! will be coming, though I scrapped the first episodes because it was boring and stupid and awful and boring. So, it'll start up May 5th as previously scheduled!
I love that this series exists, so much useful info here. Keep it up!

Episode 5 - Wonder Boy vs Adventure Island

Enjoy!
Oh Wonderboy, you screwed up, totally weird licensing debacle. Though in the end the confusion brought forth a lot of neat games.

Good episode, informative as always. I could never get over Master Higgins' face either.
