Winamp, dead at 16

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Winamp faded from relevance years ago after bloating horribly and facing competition from better open-source media players. I'm surprised this application was still being developed.

I was using Winamp till 2011 only for its VGM plugins, but nowadays Foobar does support most VGM formats. Hopefully the rest of Winamp's VGM plugins will get ported.

I'm using Jetaudio and it's okay so far. The paid version has more EQ features but the basic app is good enough as is.

My condolences to the loved ones of winamp.
I use iTunes as well these days, but I fucking hate it. It is one of the worst interfaces for music listening and organizing ever, and if it weren't for the ease of it communicating with my iOS devices, I'd kick it to the curb in a second.
I miss the old scrolling album cover view because I like CDs and it was the closest thing to browsing through physical albums. It was a dick move to take that away. Otherwise, I like smart playlists and I use a bunch of tags and identifiers in itunes to play my music. I don't have a problem with it, though it is reaching that "too many features" point where the software has so many options that basic use of its primary functions becomes slow and tedious.

I've been listening to music on my computer since 2002. Winamp was THE music player I used. I may have fiddled with other players over the years, like Real Audio, Windows Media Player, VLC, even the TDK mp3 player that came with an old aftermarket CD burner I put in my old computer during the Windows 98 days, but I was never truly happy with them for playing music, so I went back to Winamp. Sure I had rough moments with it (Winamp 3? yuck!), but I kept on. So when I heard about them basically disappearing from the face of the Earth in a month, I was saddened. So many memories.

But it's not like I'm going to use something else immediately though. I don't use iTunes because....coughcoughihateappleproductscoughcough.

Pandora? I don't stream music.

Spotify? What the fuck is a Spotify?

So yeah, Winamp forever. Or something...

Continuing to use old computer apps is kinda like how our grandparents stick to using old things... and dont want to move to something newer and shinier.

Finally got my grandmother (91) to buy a LCD TV last year, up till then she was using one of those wooden console TV's from like 1981.

Also, im sick of hearing about Spotify.

Here's a nice little website for taking special media from certain websites XD

I believe the proper phrase is "if it aint broke, dont fix it."

For me, in this case atleast, the something newer and shinier was not nearly as stable, nor was it as good, as what I used Winamp for. I use to be an event planner and for dances, weddings, or cocktail hours, we would play music. Winamp never failed me, where as itunes crashed on me a twice and we were done (VLC had a bad track record aswell). VirtualDJ worked well, but I did not need any of the bells or whistles. Winamp was simple, quick, and I knew the shortcuts so well I could almost use it headless.

Its not like my ability to use it goes away, oldversion.com will always have a copy. But it did what it needed to with no issues. I have VLC and Media Player Classic installed on my computers aswell, but good ole winamp never really gave me an issue. I am using it right now actually.

That's a silly statement. :?

Do you buy a new car every year, just because there's a newer model? Do you throw out your stinky wooden handled hammer because someone is selling a carbon fiber one now? Do you tear down your house and rebuilt it with newer better materials every few years?

Newer isn't always better. If you think everyone should always have the newest and shiniest, why are you here on a retro game site?
I think you misunderstood, im saying that we use old apps because they work for us, just like our grandparents stick to the old ways that work for them.

Also, im working on getting a backlit GBA, so pretty sure i dont care for newer and shinier so much.

I dont even have a damned smartphone.

PARTY ON!
