The MMO I'll be doing the month this is being played

Seriously, this seems to have a lot of support behind it. Enjoy whichever one it is all.
Why not play it? You can certainly play PSO for a month and get the full experience. I mean if you end up liking it, no one is going to stop you from continuing to play it after the month is over.

After some thought I decided it was the better choice.
FFXI relies heavily on interactions among players - it's much harder to play alone or in small groups.
PSO also has the offline mode for those to just wish to play amongst themselves - this is what I may end up doing given the unreliability of my internet connection.
I agree with your sentiments.
PSO is pretty awesome, I still play it, mostly on Xbox since it's the most convenient to throw on a Hard Drive. You can even play co-op via split screen.
Gamecube version is also great, and you don't even need to worry about having an existing online (offline) account or anything (Xbox requires an old Xbox Live account saved to the system or a patch to bypass).
But I am also biased, because I (almost) NEVER play games online.
I've always been annoyed at FFXI for not offering a single player experience. It really shouldn't have been a numbered game in the series (FF Online would have been more appropriate, and yet Phantasy Star
Online is the one with the solo option

).

^ Tried that one, it stank.
Not enough patches, the economy is shit, and the community is full of trolls and noobs.

Exed, you've never played PSO have you? I don't think you know what you'll be missing out on. Just play the single player mode. It's a straight up single player campaign, and I'm sure you could beat it in a month.

If you are just looking to go through the game's Normal mode, do the missions and read up on some story (all of which is entirely optional, a really nice way to do story in a game imo), you could get through it in a week or so.
Whenever I make a new character nowadays, I don't even stop playing until I hit level 25 or so
Try it out Exed, you may be surprised! On the Gamecube, it is one of my favorite multiplayer games. I have memory cards set aside just to hold friend's PSO characters (along with the characters I am leveling with them), and we romp on it whenever they come over, always making progress and finding new rare items.
It doesn't feel like an MMO, it feels like a mix between 3D Gauntlet and Diablo.

Can you play PSO in local multiplayer?

exactly. The first time I tried it, I honestly thought I'd hate it. But I had a free afternoon during a snowstorm, so I figured "eh, I'll pop it in, give it a shot, hate it and add it to my sale thread."
An hour later I was hooked.
A month later it's all I had played.
Months later I own several ports, sequels, strategy guides, etc.

Yep! On the GC at least, it supports up to 4p local.

Can you play through the main story in Multiplayer? Or do you all have to bring in your own characters from other files?
It might be something my girlfriend would give a shot.
