It's very hard to pick just one title. Hmmm, a few choices come to mind

Batman Arkham Asylum - I think Arkham City is better, but Asylum laid the groundwork. Best 3d combat system around (sorry Bayonetta, God of War, and Devil May Cry) and finally brought Batman into modern gaming successfully. It's the new standard for comic book super hero games and is the flagship DC comics video game franchise.
Viva Pinata - I've never played anything quite like it. One of the most endearing, charming and relaxing games I've ever played
Valkyria Chronicles - Redefining how I think of Japanese strategy rpgs. It also was a nice twist on third person shooters in a way
Heavy Rain - A lot of clever ideas with choice based story telling that actually matters (unlike The Walking Dead or, to some extent, Mass Effect), using quick time events in interesting ways(which also can have significant effects on the story), and melding PC Point and Click Adventure games into a console experience in a functional way
Mass Effect - Really gaming's equivalent to a massive, multi-media franchise like Star Wars or Star Trek. Also, the first series to so brilliantly use the concept of a "trilogy" in a meaningful way in the gaming industry. In some ways, I still consider the first game the best despite a lot of the criticism it gets now. Screw everyone, the Mako was fucking awesome!

Honorable mention to Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 for modernizing jrpgs in a lot of ways and introducing a truly brilliant combat system. I also consider FF XIII one of the most beautiful games of this HD generation

From the digital space, my game of this gen is Journey, no competition.

Lowest point this gen,
Probably the fall of the Resident Evil franchise and arguably Capcom in general

I dont see how the Batman games have better combat than Metal Gear Rising. Metal Gear Rising has some of the elements from the Batman games but are interrogated with way more depth and more rewarding execution (where in the Batman games you hardly need any reflexes or precision to parry guys).

How is Mass Effect the equivalent to a multi media franchise when it is only famous for its games (I don't even know what other products Mass Effect has).

Sorry for picking on you gamerforlife

Wow it is awesome to see everyone picks. The variety is what surprises me. Didnt have a lot of everybody picking the same games.

I think if anyone wants to throw PC games in please mention that is what they are from. The sheer number of PC games beyond consoles, may make it a little hard for some of us to recognize them. As you can see I dont really game on my PC, I just got away from it awhile back and never went back.

It is very interesting seeing everyones taste in gaming. Sometimes I think I get stuck in the "everyone likes what I like mindset" LOL.

I wanted to pick some of the RPG's that the PS3 has gotten but I have yet to invest time in them. I noticed a lack of those games being picked here.

I could never answer this question. I'd would be hard to even pick a game of the year for me. Because I always have a favorite game for a moment, then a new one comes along or I forgot all about one game. I have many favorites.

I could name a lot of games, all of which are excellent games. But picking only one as a favorite, that's impossible for me.

This gen has produced dozens, or perhaps hundreds of gems. I'm talking about DS, PSP, Wii, 360 and PS3.

Gotta go with Ni No Kuni. Spectacularly well done and I loved the characters.

Minecraft. It was a new type of gameplay. It was a major factor in the rise of indie games this generation. It spawned countless creative projects. And it brought the magic of LEGOS to a new generation even better than anything with the official LEGO brand on it.

But I did spend more time playing Street Fighter IV. ;)

That is true. Do the lego games even have a game that is like Minecraft where it is about world building?

Still have to play a huge amount of games (alice, lollipop chainsaw, shadows of the dammed, no more heroes, uncharted games, last of us, mario games, etc, etc, etc). But from the small amount i played this gen i should with fallout 3 or minecraft or the walking dead...

I rarely replay a game the same day i finish it but with fallout 3 and TWD i beat them more than 1 time... in the same week.

So I bought Fall Out 3 and Project Gotham Racing 4, improving my 360 collection to 4 games.

After I finish the Summer game challenge, I will probably dive into this current gen. It should be nice playing modern games after dwelling in the NES age for so long.
