You are wrong about Fatal Fury Battle Archives 1. The system Menu button is mapped to Start. I just tried it too, you cannot activate the Hidden Desperation mode at the beginning of the round (at least not with the start button, it just brings up the menu).
Beautiful. Then this must apply only to the US release because it's not that way on its JPN counterpart (It's the version I've chosen to play FF Special here).
Ah..., I made a grand assumption there.
Yes, I'm playing the the US version (wonders if the Pal release suffers the same ailment).
When I 1st heard about the issue, I never considered that the Japan version would be any different (seems like a simple enough port, why would they need to change anything?).

The instruction book even details the HDMs. But then, it wouldn't be the only time that the instruction book had an unavailable feature.

Nice to know that people have a more perfect option for the game on PS2. I thank you for your input on the matter.

As far as the PAL version, I assume it would have the same problem as the US release if it didn't get some addition development to rectify the issue.
The JPN and US version are essentially identical, with the exception of the online component being removed (and this strange discovery.) Wonder why G1M2 did this. I'm not entirely sure but I also remember that the US version had altered button layout by default, compared to the JPN version which by the way, made more sense. (X=LK/Square=LP/Tri=HP/Cir=HK).
I wonder if this oddity continued in FF BA2??? (I will check!).
Likewise, I appreciate very much all the info you've provided as well.

So I played some last night at difficulty Level 4 (NG) and I forgot how tough it could be. Jubei Yamada's range is pitiful but if you can get in close you can easily combo in a few hits, and his big strength is all the throws he has including one particularly useful air toss/drop by pressing the D button. He also has a dash move that connects with another throw if timed properly. Had a lot of fun interrupting Terry's power waves that way.

Wubba, wubba. I'm in the pink today, boy!

I just started playing this along with Fatal Fury 2 on the Fatal Fury Battle Archives vol. 1 for PS2. I played enough of the first Fatal Fury to beat it as every character (no, not on hard or even mvs - the best was Terry on normal). It was frustrating enough to make me want to take a break! I lost several times in FF2 before getting the hang enough to win against a few characters. I think "beginner" might be my style in FF Special for quite a while.

Now I have the Neo Geo Pad 2, which is a way better controller. I don't know how anyone plays fighting games on the normal PS2 controller without destroying their thumb on the d-pad.

Oh and it's probably worth mentioning that one of my prized laserdiscs is a promo for Fatal Fury 3: Road to Final Victory. After the main part (clips of people playing the game with voice-actors playing characters over it) there's a ridiculous promo video with live actors playing the characters. If anyone's curious, someone put it on YouTube!

Ok, spent some time with the GG port if this tonight.

Honestly, I was expecting a giant ball of suck-ass, but I was actually surprised by some of the characteristics of this version.

First, the character details are very lacking, which I was expecting, being a handheld port and all. Yet, despite this, the animations during fights and performing special moves were actually mostly there. Also, the response of the controls were amazingly crisp.

The music is lacking, but I've come to expect that of handheld systems, so this wasn't a big issue.

One weird thing is the roster; very scaled back. I assume this was to keep the gameplay itself moving well. Oddly enough, the pace of the fights seemed slightly quicker than those played on regular consoles.

The roster is missing Cheng, Jubei, Big Bear, Kim, Axel Hawk, Lawrence Blood, and Krauser. But you get Ryo Sakazaki as a regular character; no having to unlock him.

So my opinion is that while seriously flawed in aesthetic terms, the gameplay was solid enough to keep me entertained to beat it twice; with Ryo and Terry.

I will definitely be popping this into my AES once I get some spare time. After MOTW has been stuck in their for 3 months its time to change it out. MOTW is the only game my friends and I play together. Has anyone tried the Turbo CD version of it? How does it hold up?

I was thinking how amused I was that he was using a Capcom fighter-themed controller to play a classic SNK fighter.
