I don't think most rare games are worth their cost of entry just to play them.
As collectibles, maybe, but not to play. Same as the story contained in the pages of a rare comic book isn't going to be worth tens/hundreds/thousands just to read.
I tend to go with the "rule" presented earlier - standard retail or lower. There are way too many great games for cheap to pay hundreds for just one.
