Looking for a VCR/DVD player - tips?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I currently have an old Win98 PC that I setup to game with, and I was ecstatic to get a copy of Out of This World on 5.25" floppy. You could play games in DOSbox, but would it feel the same if you weren't dealing with those clunky floppies?

I think it has been atleast 7 or 8 years since I have used any of those. Floppies being the last. I haven't had a floppy drive on my PC in that long. It has probably been 10 years or more for a cassette or vhs.
Y'all don't have any floppy games in those massive collections?

Actually no. I had a few way back in the day, but long gone. Most of my early PC gaming was in middle school with Command & Conquer, Warcraft 2, and Diablo. They were all on CD.

When I was really young my grandfather had an Apple 2C computer and it ran off 5.25 floppies. I remember playing snake and poker on that.

Now, I have considered getting an old rig running win 95 or 98 with floppy drives and collecting some big box PC games, especially the old SSI gold box games. But Hobie talked me down off that a few times now lol.

The problem is that magnetic media is very volatile - easily corrupted or killed.

I collect mostly cartridges for my Tandy and Commodore systems for that very reason.

I would like to get some old Ys floppies eventually though.

This is true. If they are stored properly, should last a long time though. I think you are missing out on some great games that only had a floppy release. I have C64 disks from the 80s that still load just fine. On the other hand they do not get the milage they once did, maybe helps to prevent the wear. One good thing about PC floppies is that most are in DOS which makes for an easy CDR backup once installed. The game is not partially buried under windows drivers, the entire game is installed in its own dedicated folder.

I found a useful function for the VHS. I pop in a tape for a quick record of a foreign language station for my mother in law, handy for her to watch programs while recovering in the hospital. Nobody will steal that old VHS player which is also easier for her to use versus a menu driven TV hard drive recorder.

The talk earlier of running a DVD player thru a VHS to watch the DVDs is silly. Even a low budget DVD player has a 480p component option, best to hook up directly. If the TV is older at least use the SVideo leads.

What's really funny is the first VCR that was my own. Older than I am, it was given to from my uncle. It was HUGE and weighed a ton. It was top loading and the remote wasn't wireless! It had an 1/8" jack that you plugged the remote into the back, and the wire was 10-15' long.

If I own it, I use it, regardless of what format it is. A Queensryche album is a Queensryche album whether it be on CD, digital download, or cassette. The same applies to my movie collection. I'm not about to give up the best movies of the 80s and 90s just because they're on VHS and I bought a DVD player.

I have a nice working one + remote I don't need anymore. It's off-brand but was seldom used, and has lasted me years.

PM me if you wanna take it off my hands, and save some $$$. I even have some anime and kaiju VHS tapes you might be interested in.

Those dual units didn't get sold for very long did they?

BTW if you like old tapes, don't pass on watching the commercials!
