How old are you, menegrothx? I ask because I wonder if this is an attitude taken by a certain generation who were not as exposed to his reviews. For me, Ebert's name has always been synonymous with the concept of film review.

Since I don't live in the US, I think age is irrelevant - I wouldn't have been exposed to his reviews either way. I'm sure he's great at what he does, but I have a feeling that those two comments indicate that I'm not at the same wavelength with him. My big sister's boyfriend is close to 40 (and a big movie fanatic) and he feels the same way, so I don't think it's a generational thing, rather a matter of what kind of mindset you have.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Menegrothx, Ebert was one of the stalwart reviewers who, even if you didn't agree with him, gave you enough information usually that you could still get an idea of whether a film was worth seeing regardless of what his opinion of it was. But if you weren't widely exposed to his review I could see this bit getting overlooked.

I've been hearing rumors that DSM-5 is going to classify liking Freddy got Fingered as a mental illness.

Is it tasteless? Yes. Is it anywhere near as good as movies like Life of Brian and the Naked Gun trilogy? Hell no. Is it better than all the bland, playing it safe romantic comedy/Adam Sandler comedies and sitcoms? Hell yes.

No, I'm not saying that Freddy got Fingered (or Tim&Eric for that matter) is brilliant or art or 2deep4u or anything like that, but it's still a lot better than the alternative. I don't like relying on shock value and I value good writing (Life of Brian fx), but I do think that stuff like that which goes all out and doesn't try to please any one has more artistic merit and "depth"/hidden brilliance than it's given credit for. Tim&Eric and Tom Green all seem like real life trolls who refuse to break kayfabe so it's really hard to tell when they're doing something deliberately and if they should be given credit for those moments when they actually do something quite brilliant (unrelated: isn't that exactly what happened to the guy who made the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre?)

Yeah, pretty much. TCM is a brilliant movie, but not on purpose. Tobe Hooper was actually aiming for a PG rating and that's why there's no blood and you never see chainsaw cut flesh, but it was (and is) so terrifying even without all that that it got the R rating anyway. Springtime For Hitler?

Ah, that explains things. I thought you lived somewhere in the US for some reason. I can understand someone not being in the US knowing about his cultural impact here.

And for the record, he often also hated those shoddy romantic comedies and Adam Sandler movies too.

Best not to jump to conclusions and judge someone by two comments.

And Freddy Got Fingered is awful.

To quote Adam Sandler, "Only an idiot would like any of my movies". Call me an idiot, as I like Happy Gilmore.

I didn't always agree with him, but he was a great reviewer. Sad to see him go.

Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison and Bullet Proof are hilarious in my opinion. Don't care much for anything after "Big Daddy"
