I saw Wreck-it Ralph in Theaters. I had a lot of fun watching this movie.

It's worth knowing before you watch this flick that a lot of the references in this movie are indirect. Sure, specific games like Q-Bert, Street Fighter II, and Sonic get referenced. Most of the references are more subtle. I like that they don't beat you over the head. Either you notice the reference to the arcade classic "tapper" or you don't, and the movie moves on without tapping you on the shoulder to make sure you got the joke. If you're a grown-up who's played Donkey Kong in the arcade, Wreck-it Ralph and Fix-it Felix are immediately recognizable characters; on the other hand, if you're a kid who has never seen the inside of an arcade, Wreck-it Ralph and Fix-it Felix still work as solid characters.

Well-played Disney, well-played.

I don't see how the Tapper or Donkey References were subtle. I mean they literally showed the Tapper game being played in the movie. That's not subtlety. Nothing about Wreck it Ralph was subtle at all. It practically hits you over the head with the references.

The Bad Guy therapy session made every kid laugh whether they knew the characters or not. So did the Q*Bert stuff.

The movie doesn't beat you over the head with cameos, they're there for comic relief and don't distract you from Ralph's story.

And the best thing about the cameos is that kids don't have to know the characters; they're still funny even if you have no clue who they are, and that what's makes the movie great.

It's a bit predictable, but it is entertaining, fun, clever, pretty, and the voice acting is top notch. You take the video game theme out of it, and it's still a great buddy story.

Take out the video game theme and there would have been nothing special about the movie at all. That's the game's hook. In fact, the movie couldn't exist without the video game themes as they form the basis of the plot.

Again, I'm not hating on this movie, but other kids movies are written far better like the Kung Fu Panda movies, Shrek, The Incredibles, Despicable Me, How to train Your Dragon, etc. Take out the video game gimmick and you're left with a movie that, while still fairly enjoyable, just doesn't hold up when compared to those other movies and would have easily been forgotten by anyone who saw it. I mean, you look at Venelope. I came to like her at the end of the movie, but she's not nearly as endearing as the girls in Despicable Me. And the supporting cast of characters in Wreck it Ralph is no where near as charming and entertaining as The Fearsome Five from Kung Fu Panda or the various characters in Shrek or Gru's minions in Despicable Me.

That's my main issue with Wreck it Ralph, while I like the story as a whole and the fanboy in me digs the gaming references, it's a movie that could have been written better. A lot of the character dialog is kind of lame, many of the jokes fall flat, and the portrayal of some of the characters is a bit too over the top. Venelope being the best example. A more laid back approach to her character would have made her more likable right from the get go. Instead, they made her this hyper, obnoxious, overly talkative, bratty character that is off putting for the first half of the movie, and then it's like the movie has to do all this unnecessary work of making you like her as the movie goes on after trying so hard to make her obnoxious in her first couple of scenes. As adorable kid characters go in movies like this, she's not one of the better examples

The film totally does stack the deck to make you like Venelope, no argument there.

I know you're not hating on the movie, but I disagree that it is poorly written. Take the video game element out of it, and you still have a witty buddy film. You can take the Cop w/ Criminal out of 48 Hours and that movie would also be a witty buddy film. It's just a motif.

Also, b/c of WIR I can never watch Batman (1989) without thinking that Batman should have hit the Joker with his own glasses.

Well, we can agree to disagree. I think the movie was actually lacking a lot of wit. When two characters are bonding over how the word duty reminds them of poop, that's not really witty. Moments like that it seems like we're supposed to smile at how adorable Venellope is and instead it has you rolling your eyes. A lot of the movie's jokes were either too obvious or kind of low brow. I did like the glasses bit though, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who got a kick out it. Someone even posted that clip on youtube.

I think having Sara Silverman voice Venellope was not a good move. she's not the sort of person that can portray a cute, adorable kid. I also didn't like that chick from Glee as the soldier lady. She has an annoying voice. Some poor casting choices in this movie. Ralph and Felix were great though, and I loved that they got some authentic voice actors for some of the game characters. The guy who did Sonic in the movie has done Sonic before. That was pretty cool.

It's nice that they got Sonic's game VA for the film, but I think it would have been even cooler if they'd gotten Jaleel White. He'll always be Sonic to me. Want proof he's still awesome? Check this out:

It's just a voice, and I thought she sounded adorable. Yeah, Silverman is raunchy as all get out, but again, it's just a voice.

I initially did not like Silverman being cast, but she worked for the character. I hope they go through and make the sequel they have plans for - where it is about console gaming.

Disney has actual Fix-it Felix cabinets traveling the country at tradeshows and events to promote the film - and unlike the flash game it plays like the one in the movie (two button controls, actual movement controls, and has some difficulty). I really hope the sell it, or it gets leaked. Id love to have the actual game.
