Hobie, you may have witnessed a shuttle re-entry. My dad is an avid sky-watcher/amateur astronomer. He's always telling me when certain satellites will be visible overhead, or when cool astronomical events will take place.
We spent one evening out in the back yard and watched the shuttle reentering the atmosphere. It is still one of the coolest things I've ever seen in the night sky. The transit across the sky took several minutes - similar to what you described. It looked like it glittered as it burned overhead and left a trail that was visible for several minutes.
