Russia is a country I love learning about but I'm scared to actually go there.

Hobie, you may have witnessed a shuttle re-entry. My dad is an avid sky-watcher/amateur astronomer. He's always telling me when certain satellites will be visible overhead, or when cool astronomical events will take place.Hobie-wan wrote:Indeed. Many years ago I caught what must have been a satellite falling out of orbit. I had walked out of a Mall and just happened to look up and see it. It was much higher and slower, I think I watched it burn for at least 10 minutes as it crawled across the sky.
We spent one evening out in the back yard and watched the shuttle reentering the atmosphere. It is still one of the coolest things I've ever seen in the night sky. The transit across the sky took several minutes - similar to what you described. It looked like it glittered as it burned overhead and left a trail that was visible for several minutes.

Anyone watch the Daily Show segment they did on this? It was hilarious.
