The 3DO...Worth while?

The 3DO was unique for its time, and a very cutting edge system. But for collecting, its not worth it. Almost all of its games are on other systems. Now the 3DO does enjoy the best versions of many FMV games if thats what you're into. Like many others here, I have owned a 3DO, and I got rid of it. There seemed to be no point in owning it. That being said I do own a Philips CD-i, for the novelty of course.

To me, the point of owning it is that I remember wanting one as a kid, seeing coverage in gaming magazines, and so on. I agree, it's probably not one to collect for, but as part of a console collection it's not bad. Not too expensive and there are decent games, just, mostly ones that are better on PS1 or Saturn.

Might just depend on what makes the purchase worth it to the individual.

Unlike most people in this thread, I'm going to stick up for the 3DO, and say if you are running out of consoles to buy, and you want something that's unique and has a decent library, get a 3DO. Preferably an FZ-1, because it looks flipping gorgeous next to other consoles. It really feels like a seriously expensive piece of kit, which it was at the time.

Sure many games you can get on the 3DO are on other systems, but you have literally zero region lockout, so you can play exclusive Japanese games like Dr Hauzer, and you can also played burned games with little to no problem at all, so that means you can play the rare RPG Lucienne's Quest.

It also has the only console port of Star Control 2 (which is fully voiced unlike the PC version), and Alone in the Dark 1, which are worth buying a 3DO alone. It also has better ports of Starfighter, and Space Hulk, which look, and feel much better than their more powerful console counterparts. Especially Starfighter, holy Jesus Christ on a pogo stick, for the time that must of been absolutely incredible, that... draw distance. The Saturn and Psone versions look like a flipping joke in comparison.

Also an awesome port of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Possibly one of the best ports of Street Fighter 2 to date.

So yeah, most people who bad mouthed the console probably haven't played it anyway's (and possibly even wasn't born until after it was even released), and are just going by the whole thing that there's a load of crappy FMV games and nothing else, when the 3DO is so much more than that, and the amount of FMV games for the system isn't all that bad at all. It was nearly pretty much the Playstation before the Playstation, and it deserves a lot more respect than it get's.

It's also cheap as chips, and you can get it off ebay for about less than two new games, with a few games included. Games are also easy to find on Ebay as well.

pssst. SC2 on PC is still better. No load times. You can put the voice files in the PC version and have it work fine. There's also an HD version out now.

Region free is a moot point when there's nothing worth playing.

@Jazoni89 Nice, 1st post and you come in on a comment defending the 3DO. I like ya already!

I think its worth it, but I like to keep my mouth quiet while I buy up all the games.

You made some great valid points as well, the 3do isnt the go to system and you definitely have to do your research before diving in. If your hardcore and can play just about anything and appreciate and enjoy then you should grab one, if your looking to get the best "fantasy" pics of other peoples opinion then maybe it may not be what you expect. This first qtr of 2013 is actually my first year anniversary of collecting 3do, if I get some spare time hopefully I can post some pics of this monster collection I have.

Does SC2 work with Windows 7/8? Also i would rather not spend hours tinkering about with settings, and files personally.

But that's just like...your opinion man, there are a few RPG games, Dr Hauzer and Policenauts that are Japan only which are worth playing depending on your knowledge of Japanese. I have A PAL 3DO FZ-1 so the region free on the 3DO really helps me. I'll tell you what though, I would of absolutely killed for the Mega-CD to have a region free bios, not getting those sweet lunar games on it depresses me to no end. At least the 3DO got that right, even if there is a few less than desirable imports.

There's also this awesome looking import game that i forgot the name of, but you are a robot going through a maze shooting other robots which seems to have really good combat mechanics.

Open source and free to download. Works just fine on Windows 7. Only a change of name and support for Higher Resolution and some other nice features. Voice files are easily found on the internet and added to the game.

The HD version looks far too clean IMO. Most HD versions of most old PC games do.

I just prefer the old graphics, it just makes Star Control 2 look like almost a flash game to me. It just doesn't have the same Retro feel, and that's what i look for when playing Retro games. It's a part of the experience, and the 3DO version is still rather nice looking anyway, especially on a small TV with a Scart connection.

Though i don't agree with every game not getting a HD makeover, the original Fallout's for example would benefit very nicely from one, due to the crummy resolution. Even if it was in a Fallout Tactics style i would still dig that very much.

I absolutely agree, a great piece of gaming equipment, shame about the prone to breaking tray though, which is why some go for the FZ-10.
