I don't know how you can look at those numbers and not see room to improve OR let it be small and give the actives a larger voice.

There's nothing to say changing the voting system will change these numbers. This is left to mere chance and the mood/will of participants. There were plenty of games on the schedule last year I really wanted to play but I just didn't have the time and/or wasn't in the mood. Also I rarely submitted scores even if I did play, I'm sure that's the same with many others.

I don't think the voting system for 2012 was broken or flawed, but I do think trying a new voting system would be interesting. Maybe we really like how doing a new system works and do it again next year, maybe we don't like it too much and avoid it going forward.

As for the expensiveness/availability of ports, I see that as a non-issue. If it's available on MAME (which is generally gonna be the case), everyone can play.

Never said it would.

What I said is these numbers suggest we allowed everyone on the site to vote - but only a fraction participated in discussion and posted scores. Since it was primarily the same folks throughout the course of the year, they should have a larger voice in what is chosen than random people posting a vote in something they don't care about and then disappearing.

In the end, i'll be playing no matter what the decision ends up being. I feel confident that won't be true of everyone who casts votes. Thus, the noiseredux method makes the most sense to me.

Quite the opposite in the shmup community. If it wasn't for mame, most of the shmups that we like to play today would still be unknown since there were so many awesome games that were Japanese arcade releases only.

Bruno said it best back on Page 1 -

Let the poll run for a few days and call it, everyone that cares will have voted by then.

I'd rather have a quick & easy method and Noise's is the best way. This way,

- we can trust the regulars with a guaranteed title that will be worth the time (no duds)
- we can be exposed to games we may not have heard of or played (much like this year's STGT!)
- we know there might be more people willing to try what the trusted group has picked (we know our games)
- we can quit all this discussion sooner and get to picking 2013 games and playing DDP this month ()

That's all I have to say. As MJM pointed out, no matter what the method, I'm in, I'm playing, I'm gonna do whatever. Shmups is shmups.

Ok. Hash and EE have made their winner's pics. And since the 2013 schedule is not set in stone, yet, they can still change their mind if they want. We can fill in the rest of the schedule whenever everyone (including Hash and EE) is ready to vote/pick some more games.

01) January:
02) February:
03) March:
04) April:
05) May:
06) June:
07) July:
08) August: XXXXX (Month off due to annual shmups.org competition)
09) September: Gazelle: Air Gallet (hashiriya1, Winner's pick.)
10) October: Capcom: Varth (ExedExes, Winner's pick.)
11) November:
12) December:

can you stop acting like this "Winner's pick" thing is even an option that's being considered? They'll get a non-contested pick under noiseredux's method if it wins.

Not everyone who participated put up a score. Not everyone furthermore had access to some of the more expensive titles on that list.

Thats true, but not many more people wre actively discussing the games either.

And as for the expensive titles, as Brunoath mentioned, they are available on MAME. Of course some folks don't like MAME, and want to play games that they own/collected, and thats totally cool.

However, I don't think its wrong to say that folks that

A) Don't want to post scores or discuss as much as others, and
B) Are pretty much guaranteed to not participate every month

might have smaller push on what we spend our year doing.
