Well, that's exactly how it looks in the real game (just with less detail and polish)
I know that, I play Sonic 2 regularly, and the detail and polish are what I dislike. The scale and everything are fine, it's just it doesn't really need all the little details, it kinda of breaks the semi-cartoony feel of Sonic for me.
I like the Sonic sprite and the background and level are fine it's just Robotnik is too over the top. I'd prefer more block/gradient colours and less specularity.
I'm not saying it's not cool or anything, or am an offended fan who thinks it's a blaspheme to Sonic. But I probably wouldn't buy it if the whole, hypothetical, game was as shiny and over excessively detailed as this. I could imagine Metropolis zone and Casino Night zone being headache inducing. Obviously it should be more detailed than the original to exploit the HD res and colour range, but I don't think it needs to go as far as this, whereby it somewhat breaks the aesetic of the game, at least for me.

That scene is probably my absolute favorite of my gaming life.
That was so intense for as an early teen.
AGREED 100000% top ten gaming moments ever for me.

did anyone notice the numbers on the score and time? 1965-9-17. stage select code :)
Nice find! The code was long forgotten in my mind.

Also this was a great scene, but pretty much everything from Lava Reef and afterwards in Sonic 3 & Knuckles is absolute 2D perfection to me, and trumps this scene. I got the shivers just seeing the Death Egg wedged in the ceiling in Lava Reef. That was a great little touch.
I pretty much agree with you there. The best for me though was the bonus level that only the dedicated who got all the chaos emeralds got to see. Sonic going all DBZ and flying through space smashing through rocks and PWNING Robotnik

That screenshot is gorgeous by the way, but the purist in me doesn't really want to see the old games prettied up with shiny new graphics. It just isn't authentic. It's like someone taking an independant, low budget movie and adding expensive special effects. Or Working Designs screwing up Silhouette Mirage by tampering with the gameplay elements. Just leave well enough alone.

I'd be more comfortable if they just left the original game alone and instead opted to do a remake. The nice thing about remakes is that they often take on an identity of their own, and can be judged as something completely seperate from the original. It's like how Tomb Raider Anniversary completely changed the T-Rex encounter from the original game. Both the original encounter and the one in the remake bare no resemblance to eachother other than being epic encounters, and they are each cool in their own way.

I think the Robotnik is the best part! I also really like the background sky/space

looks like someone else had (more like snagged) your idea but without credit to the artist or anything.
