Just to end this little debacle regarding a lack of creativity in designing Pokemon, both Gen 1 and Gen 5 have some great Pokemon and some flat out uninspired Pokemon.

Obviously it's still gonna come down to opinion in the end, but I hope that settles things a bit. :)

I loved seeing your lists because except in one or two cases, they're very different from what I would chosen. It's cool to see exactly how much one's mileage can vary with this sort of thing.

Pokemon is too complicated now in my opinion.

151 pokemon was perfectly manageable. Catching that many pokemon seemed within reach. Even by the gen III catching them all seemed impossible. Now it's just insane. 649 pokemon? I probably can't catch that many. I can't even remember the names of all the pokemon now, let alone their types, stats, and movesets. Worse, many new pokemon seem just seem like near clones of other existing pokemon. Every generation has the bird pokemon, the caterpillar pokemon...

In addition, each generation introduces new moves, items, and other subtleties. The complexity of the game has increased exponentially, and it wasn't exactly simple to begin with.

The big draws to pokemon for me were catching 'em all and devising strategies. I probably can't catch 649 pokemon and to devise any meaningful strategy I practically need to take a college course. The games are all but ruined for me right now. Maybe someday I'll adjust.

Generation 1 might be my favorite generation. Crystal sure was great though...

Vanilluxe and Garbodor are two of my favorite Gen 5 Pokemon. Pankakes... bro... WTF?

Edit: Just read the whole thread. So much Garbodor/Vanilluxe hate. I despised them too, for a time. Then I fell in love with the idea of using Pokemon that were corrosive to the souls of those I faced in battle. The first time I used my Garbodor against my best friend he shut off his system  .

Seriously though, I love Garbodor's little mouth. The Vanilluxe family are among an extremely small number of pure ice type Pokemon, which I dig. Plus, they just look tasty.

I can't say I'm a big fan of Garbodor, but I've always kinda like the Vanillish line. I dont really see an ice cream pokemon being any stupider than Gen 1's Exeggcute - who I also like.

Garbador is actually one of my favorite Pokemon, just because of his pained "WHY DO I EXIST? IT HURTS TO LIVE!" face when you realize his bag is just as big as his previous form's but his innards have grown to the point he burst open. It's little details like that.

I'd honestly say that Gen III, especially Emerald is my favorite gen. The environments were varied, secret bases were awesome, there were a whole bunch of side-places to explore and revisit once you got HMs (diving, the volcanic pass, Shoal Cave, Meteor Falls), and Battle Frontier was great.

Also, for those saying that Gen I pokemon are all inherently better than Gen V ones. I dare you to say that Caterpie is better than his stand-in Sewaddle.

Look at this fucker. He is the most adorable sonofabitch you will ever meet. Let's see your Caterpie make :3 faces like that.

Here's my take:
There are 151 Pokémon. No more. Any other Pokémons, games, trading cards etc. are FAKE. There is no such thing as "Generation 2", "Pokémon for DS" or "Saphire Version".

There is only red, blue and yellow.

Anything else is BLASPHEMY

That's rather closed-minded of you. It's like saying there was only ever one Mario or one Sonic game, or that Dragon Quest ended at the first, when several games after them improved on the formula so much and fixed so many issues.

See, that's taking it way too far to me. I mean, I very much prefer the originals, but there were lots of cool later pokemon... I think the mistake that Nintendo made was adding just too many with each generation- there's no need for another 150 every generation, I think even in the range of 25-40 would have kept the series super fresh and alienated fewer of the older players who hate change.

I'd be really interested a pokemon... not necessarily a reboot, but like a spinoff targeted more at the mid-teens age range than young kids. Obviously it'll never happen but it would be cool to see the pokemon numbers paired down to maybe 250 and reimagined.

I would make the distinction that eggs are still in the realm of living biological organisms, so personifying them as a sentient creature isn't as big a stretch. Vanillish is based off of an inanimate object, which is what lends to its silliness as a design for a living creature. Pokemon were very often inspired by real living organisms in previous generations (or if they were unique they were still clearly organisms), which is why modern ones based off of inanimate things like garbage, ice cream, or furniture look so out of place.
