I'd say the 2 systems that I hold as my favorite were the NES and SNES. My first console was a 2600, and while I recall spending countless hours playing the games we had for it, I was only about 3 years old and don't quite have the attachment to that console like my brother does.
We got an NES about a year later, and that's where my love for gaming truly took off. I think growing up and learning to deal with limited lives, limited continues, and the mentality that most of these games you had to play beginning to end in one play-through makes me feel that current gen is a tad easier (though not necessarily less rewarding). However, I do appreciate being able to save and continue now as an adult with much more responsibilities and tasks...so convenient to stop and pick up later.
The SNES was for me just the next big thing. I remember being blown away by the colors, the gameplay, the games. I still remember getting our console on Christmas day, along with Gradius III and Populous...so many years of fun. The SNES also became the transitional period where I started excelling at games in comparison to my brother.
I think part of what makes these 2 consoles special to me is the tie-in with friends, but family especially. At almost all family gatherings, all the cousins would huddle into one room where the NES or SNES was located and we'd all take turns playing games, playing in the room, and just being kids. They bring me back to a time of unabashed enjoyment and bond building with all my cousins.

I'm also going to pick the Nintendo 64. The high amount of quality games in comparison to how many games were released for the console is probably only similar to the Dreamcast. In fact I think this adds to a console's greatness, as you were drip fed juuuuust the right amount of games. Even at Christmas you had two or three great games released, whilst now you get most of the year's best games released at Christmas time.
I experienced the N64 with friends and so the multiplayer games were key to why I played it so much. Goldeneye, Mario Kart and the WWF games as well as the Mario Party titles ensured the system was in use every weekend. Add to that one player games like Zelda, Mario and Banjo and it was the complete console. Most games didn't require memory cards, the controller was perfect for big handed freaks such as myself and there was no loading times! There was also a soul which I felt the Playstation lacked. Which is probably in part because Sony weren't game developers, I was raised on games made by Sega or Nintendo, for Sega and Nintendo systems.

The middle east is PAL region and we used to call it the SEGA MEGA DRIVE . But there is about no restricting laws or local launches or offices. For the longest period, I noticed that people got NTSC hardware since the SNES days. I still get surprised when I pop in an N64 cart and get an option for "English , Espanol, or French"(PAL version). Even DVDs are NTSC mostly.
