I consider run-n-guns more akin to platformers than shmups, but i'm not much of a shmup fan really (despite trying to get into it) so I don't know if my opinion there means much.

Or run 'n gun shooter/shoot 'em up.
I'd call Bangai-O, Astroids, Super Stardust HD, etc. shoot 'em ups. A different category that auto scrolling of course, but still shoot 'em ups.
I'd say Contra and the like are related.
Then there's Atomic Robo-Kid and those games, which try to mix EVERYTHING together.

one of the brightest and beautiful saturn shmups the graphics are just so chunky and i love it
3 judgement silversword on the xbox 360 on the eschatos disk
a retro gamers dream game simple yet hard as hell. i cant believe the wonderswan was capable of so much action on the screen at once

well.... do i really have to explain this one its like having to explain why earthbound is on your top 5 rpgs

Earthbound isn't in my top 5 RPGs, and I don't totally get all the love for it. So... yeah, you'd have to explain it.

Well since we are on it, I own more shmups than I can think to count and I don't like Radiant Silvergun
There are so many better games

I think we've had this chat before.
I like Radiant Silvergun... LIKE. It's fun, but there are many that are better IMO.

I fired up Armed Police Batrider on the ol' MAME last night after the recent talk. I forgot how tough the patterns can be on that game, geez.

Moved to shmups sub-forum. I'll add my thoughts on this juicy topic later.
For the record, I wouldn't call run 'n guns, shmups. I'd call them run 'n guns.
A shmup to me, and to most, I believe, refers to a vertical or horizontal scrolling shooter.
Other "shooters":
Arena Shooters (Cannon Spike)
First Person Shooters (Golden Eye)
Rail Shooters (Rainbow Cotton)
Run 'n Gun (Metal Slug)
Combat/Strategy Shooter (Medal of Honor)
I think there are more than enough releases in those categories that they should not be lumped into the Ikaruga's of the world. That is a shmup.
