is it strategy or turn based? I'm not much into the strategy ones, mainly because I suck at them.

Yes, that's actually one of the things I liked about it. It's not too tough so you can kind have a little fun in the battles and the fairly low difficulty means that nothing is stopping you from finishing the game and enjoying the whole story.

I would suggest it even to people who are not good at strategy rpgs.

Valkyria Chronicles is also a strategy rpg, but it doesn't play like a traditional one at all. It is like a hyrbrid of a strategy rpg and a third person shooter. There are some tricks you can use to make the game much easier when you hit a rough spot. You can always come to the forum if you need help. It's another game that I think is good even for people who are not normally into strategy rpgs.

Any Western RPG is darker and less "emo" than the majority of JRPGs but you probably already know that...
Western rpg's are more grindy and dungeon crawly than jrpg's or is that just a misconception i have? To be honest i haven't played many western rpgs at all
Maybe give the Mass Effect games a try, no grinding or dungeon crawling at all. The Mass Effect games rely heavily on third person shooter gameplay though, but you get to use the Mass Effect equivalent of "spells" in addition to gunplay. There's is even a class devoted entirely to using these skills instead of guns. They're kind of your "mage" class. "Spells" in Mass Effect are referred to as biotics or tech skills. It's just Sci Fi words for magic. Biotics are actually kind of like using the force in Star Wars.

If you enjoy Knights of the Old Republic, then the Mass Effect series and Jade Empire will be the next logical choices for you. They are from the same company. You can also try Dragon Age, but it plays better on PC.

DQVI for the DS is probably the best bet; I remember the grinding being fairly minimal. (For me it was mostly at the end because I made some mistakes with selecting character classes needed to unlock the "Hero" class.) The most fun aspect of the game for me was constantly exploring new areas and making changes between two worlds.
I've never tried any of the DS versions I'll have to give one a shot. I almost feel bad having never beat a DQ as it is such a beloved series to many people.

Seems like Jeanne D'Arc is getting several nods. I will have to check into it. i really do suck at srpg's though  If it is as easy as you all say though i might be able to get through it. i have tried several srpg's over the years and have yet to beat one. I've tried a couple in the shinning force series, ff tactics, one of the disgaea's, and a couple others that escape my memory at the moment. And it is unfortunate because i think if they were converted to more traditonal jrpg battle systems I would have enjoyed playing through them.

Jade Empire was awesome, but short I played through it a couple of times. I will have to check into mass effect and fall out a chance

Thanks for all the suggestions and input guys.

Not sure about anyone else here, but I still really enjoy playing through the older Pokemon games. Red, Blue, Yellow, and to a lesser extent Gold and Silver, are all fantastic RPGs. Sure, the main character is a kid, but he barely has any personality at all, and I don't think he even says one word throughout the entire series. On top of that, the gameplay is rock solid in all the games.

Think I might check out Jeanne d'Arc, seems to be pretty cheap these days.

The thing that makes Jeanne D'arc easier than other strategy rpgs is that you'll often have at least one character in your party who is powerful enough to wipe out multiple enemies in a single player turn with little to no assistance from the rest of your party. To say anything more would be spoilers

I would also say that it doesn't feel needlessly deep. I'm looking at you Disgaea.
