I was also blogged about on Wired's GeekDad blog and mentioned by Zeboyd Games - it feels pretty awesome!

But man, those IMO some of those comments on IndieGames.com were more brutal than I was expecting (I actually posted a response down at the bottom).

Success can be STRESSFUL but it's also really exciting.

As someone who has made and released a game, built using a program (Multimedia Fusion 2), I'm not in a position to tear you down for that. I understand that your kickstarter campaign is strictly to make the discs, and that everyone who donates is going to get the game, so the arguments from those commenters that you're "taking advantage of people" has no foundation.

If I were to give you one piece of advice, it would be to up the kickstarter goal, and hire a pixel artist to create custom graphics for the game. Library graphics just scream amateur, and are probably the biggest thing causing you to be compared to some kid developing and releasing his games for free.

Don't sweat it, all those comments were made by morons with severe entitlement issues.

Since I want to keep the deadline I've set for myself (discs made by July, finished game in June) I'm not going to be able to do that. But I'm actually toying with the idea of making a free patch for a "special edition" after the fact, with original graphics and maybe a fancier-sounding soundtrack.

I haven't really decided if I'm actually going to do that, but at very least I'm sure that any future games are going to be made with original graphics.

RPG Maker graphics could actually be a good stylistic choice given the subject matter. The more the game looks like it was made by an amateur who is trying to find something to do while unemployed, the better imo (you just don't want it to play like it's too amateur).
