Which game medium do you prefer?
Re: Which game medium do you prefer?
Even though I pretty much don't own them anymore, cartridges. They feel like video games. you can hold a cartridge and think, "Damn, there's a video game inside this thing."
Re: Which game medium do you prefer?
Had to go with cartridge. It seems like they can take some serious punishment and still work like a charm. I'm curious though, no option to choose disks?
Re: Which game medium do you prefer?
The Dreamcast is the only disc system I have. I have had issues with scratched discs in the past (used copies, sadly) and I'd have to reorder games many a time. But some of the really beat up games I have in my collection such as a badly scratched KOF 99 run well. Plus, with disc based systems, you have to deal with moving parts (the drive) simply dying. Cartridges and the consoles that use them don't have such issues. Something else to consider. I point this out because I had to replace my DC recently after 10 years due to that.Gamerforlife wrote:What I hate with discs is that, you can't always tell when or where a scratch may effect your game. You may think your game is fine, then 25 hours into Final Fantasy 9 you get to a cut scene that never plays because of some scratch on your disc. With carts, if I can get to the title screen I'm pretty certain the game will play just fineExedExes wrote:Having recently acquired a GBA, it's nice to be reminded of the awesomeness of cartridges. They are much easier to score better deals on, because even if there's no label and marks all over it, it will WORK. Compare that to a disc scratch. DC I'm looking at YOU (but to be fair, DCs do play even the most beat up discs pretty damn well)

Hopefully, by the time all the disc-based systems have worn out we will have PC-based emulators capable of running the games as well as the original systems did. I don't want to live in a world where people bid hundreds of dollars for a rare, still-working PS1 system.ExedExes wrote:The Dreamcast is the only disc system I have. Yup. They're all fine and dandy until someone does this:Key-Glyph wrote:...There's something to be said for a medium -- be it cartridge, cassette tape, or VHS -- that can be practically thrown across a room without getting damaged.

Damn cat....
Or it gets some weird crystalized film on the damn tape that I still can't figure out what it was.

Think discs are getting a little too much slack here. On the bright side, I own complete versions of just about every single PSX/PS2/etc game that I own, but I can't say that for most of my cartridge collections, lol. I'm betting that's the case for a lot of people here.

Or until the VCR or tape deck decides to "eat" the tape. Nothing more fun than taking the top off a VCR to untangle the tape from the heads.Michi wrote:Yup. Yeah but you can't just stack/line up a bunch of loose discs on a shelf. For one it doesn't look cool, and two, it's not safe. hahaXeogred wrote:Think discs are getting a little too much slack here. Having a non-CIB disc-based game collection is synonymous with a big pile of scratched-up discs.harper wrote:Yeah but you can't just stack/line up a bunch of loose discs on a shelf.
