The PlayStation d-pad is terrible for any sweeping motions. It's great for up,down, left, right precision much like the arrow keys on a computer keyboard but not much else.

Yeah, fighters are painful with it. Frankly I dislike cross dpads for the most part, the only reason the PS one gets a nod is because I grew up with it and I find it extremely comfortable if a bit stiff. Though the one on the Vita looks like they've got it right.

Vita d-pad is a big improvement. I'd still prefer a Saturn-like d-pad, but the Vita delivers. And the PSP d-pad also feels nicer despite being disconnected like a regular PlayStation controller. Just has a smoother feeling to it.

I don't have a problem with sweeping motions. I play Marvel Super-Heroes, Street Fighter Anniversary, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy on my PS1/PS2 and do just fine.

I use the d-pad on my PSP all the time. Don't know why but I'm just not to fond of it's analogue stick. I'm not sure if it's function or placement, but my thumb just sort of migrates to the d-pad naturally.

The VB's D-pads were actually pretty amazing, as was the entire VB controller. If it were possible to make a decent Descent clone for the system, the controller would be perfectly suited for it.

I really only use the D-pad for sidescrollers, RPGs, and puzzle games. They're horrible for shooters, fighters, and anything involving 3D movement.
