Yes we're all geeks, but are you happy with that?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Guess what boys and girls... meet the boy bands of 30 years ago!
As much as I don't like derailing threads, I think its really weird that you see people wearing T-shirts of The Ramones all time time now... Anybody else notice that.

Anyway, also why do you think SMB3 and other NES games are trite?
Not seeing that at all....
I don't mind people wearing t-shirts of old bands (especially since today's music really sucks), but what really bothers me is when people wear an AC/DC shirt (really popular at my old school) and I come up to them and say "Name 5 AC/DC songs." and they can't even name three.
That's kinda the point I was trying to make, I guess. I'm thinking they just wear it because they think it will make them look cool if they wear a t-shirt of a band not everyone listens to -- even if they don't listen to them much themselves...

Kinda like a I saw a kid that was probably only about 15 wearing a Pac-Man shirt. I'm not guessing he plays much Pac-Man.

I don't mean the games themselves are trite. My comment was derived from how people who think I like videogames bring up Super Mario Bros and NES.

Its similar to what GSZX1337 was talking about with the AC/DC shirt, or you talking about the kid with the pac-man shirt. So many people associate the NES to oldschool gaming, the NES fanboyism is all over the nation, and now you walk into stores geared at the much younger generation (i.e. HotTopic) to find T-Shirts with the "Konami Code" on it, NES controllers splashed across it and a quote "thumb busting" or something of the sort.

that is trite. I'm tired of the NES fanaticism, and I don't bring up that I like old game consoles to avoid people rambling on about how they don't really like games anymore but they LOVE Super Mario Bros.

Ah! ok...
The NES was the most iconic game machine ever. Remember when everybody said they were "playing Nintendo" when they were gaming? Playstation almost has that now, but not nearly to that level.

So...what about me? I listen to Nu-Metal and Kanye West. Am I losing geek points? :)

I never cared about being a geek when it wasn't 'mainstream' and I don't care now. I am who I am and I like what I like and that's how it is. If you don't like the same stuff, cool. If you do like the same stuff, that's cool. If you like the same stuff I do and you're over 18 and female, give me a call. That's about it. :)

well he certainly has a lot of namco museums to choose from so he may have.

and on the t-shirt issue, it is weirder for me to see bands like as i lay dying, killswitch engage, and even coheed and cambria and fallout boy all in popular media. i remember playing shows with these bands in hole-in-the-wall venues and basements 4 years ago and now they are headlining arena tours and all over mainstream media. somewhat daunting.

There are loads of kids wearing Ramones T-shirts around here too. I think that its becuase so many current bands site them as a big influence and the the fans of that band go out and find some Ramones albums. The same sort of thing happened with The Doors when I was at college

From a (London) UK perspective things are very different here. I think that social groups are less defined than in the states.

My friends and work colleagues are very much a mixing pot; for example my friend Sam is geeky and will play GBA ROMs in his bedroom, get up go out with his mates and drink beer & watch football, go out for some Indian food, then take a girl out to some a avant garde French film date. Next day he's in the gym pumping weights and spends the afternoon downloading torrents and installing Linux on his laptop.

That's kinda how we are (with myself very much included) we kinda evolved passed the pure Geek thing and mixed it up with some very 'jock' like things. Sam and I were calling ourselves 'GEEF' at one time because we were sitting at home playing Quake 3 via LAN (the GEEK part) and then hitting the gym 3 times a week (the BEEF part) = GEEF! haha.

In London now when people ask you what you do, lets say you meet some nice girl at a bar - and you say 'I work in I.T.' ... THAT is a winner. She thinks Bill Gates money, regular job and can fix my iPod all in one go ...

It's never been a better time to be a geek but if you add to the mix some more traditional 'dateable' personality traits - you really are hot property. lol.

I think a lot of geeks/nerds are like this as well...

it's not like I hide in my house all day long. My girlfriend and I like to go out to the clubs on thursdays, we also enjoy going to weird films and plays, then you might catch us at the beach on Sundays riding on the boat with some other gals, go to a fetish show, and other times random crap like last week we just up and decided to drive to the Keys and crash my friends work party. FREE food, booze, and hotel fare... who can beat that!

the only thing I lack is maybe the jocky weight lifting thing... we prefer things like bike riding, beaches, and women.

Your woman prefers women?

I'm not like that at all. I love my domicile and I prefer to spend as much of my free time in it as I can. I don't like the rude, noisy world. Every time I am dragged out into it, I'm bored and annoyed.
