I would have to say the intro to Half-Life 1. Riding along in that tram like it was just another day at work only to have it all go to crap absolutely blew my 5th grade mind.

Yeah, I've often seen a lot of people were apparently turned off by the game because of the start, or it's just overwhelming. To an extent I can see that, since it's one of the biggest open levels in the game. But damn I love it. Doing the whole place non-lethal is very fun for sure, I tend to go that route whenever I replay it. I also missed things like freeing Gunther, and the guy at the docks, during my first run. How about that sunken boat next to the docks with items in it? Haha, the game is endless... no matter how many times you replay it there's always new things and surprises.

Can't forget the absolute best part about UNATCO... ohhhhhhh yeah! 8)

and as to the rest of your post, the people who get turned OFF by open ended games are morons. It's like complaining that the restaurant menu has too many options xD
It deserved the Game of The Year honors in 2000, that much I know.

I haven't had much time to post *winky smiley face*

Not really an opening level (again non linear games are hard to count as having levels) but I simply love the opening to Link's Awakening. But that's probably better for a "Favorite Opening/Exposition Thread".

Have at it.

I think it's fair game. I mean it's quite restricted and closed compared to the rest of the game, so it IS an opening sequence, which you could call a level. It's not like FF or Deus Ex had levels either.

BTW you are referring to the game up to the part you get the sword right?

Yeah that was amazing. I didn't like the game after you got out of the vault as much though :(

Yeah, you can die in it, there's a timer that starts once you beat/lose to Ridley (yes, there is a difference, and winning can make him much easier later in the game). There's even a nifty cut-scene for if you die there.

I'm a huge fan of Green Hill Zone, but probably the best ever is Portal 2's first level.

Yeah, I loved the part during the Radroach infestation; the kid that bullied you all your early years, crying “Help my mom, I'm scared!” I was in awe when one of the responses was “Fuck off, I'm not going to help you.” I had to choose it. Maybe if someone was a little nicer, their mom wouldn't be food for giant roaches.

Oooh, yes. I completely agree with the Portal 2 opener. Fantastic storytelling.

I'm also fond of the opening level to Resident Evil 2. They really throw you in and freak you out, making you run through zombie-infested streets (on fire!!) immediately and with limited ammo. I was so relieved the first time I finally made it to the Police Station.
