As opposed to now? Trust me, you're just as much of an idiot now (and I'm not singling you out, everyone is) as you were then, just in a different way. That's what getting older is; finding new and interesting ways to be an idiot.

That's why Facebook allowed you to enable it for yourself before publishing it to Facebook at large -- so you could go through and remove things you didn't want to show up.

I think yesterday it was supposed to go live for everyone, but I still see people with the old profile, so you may still have time to go and edit it if that's your bag.

Facebook is like the invisible radiowaves that go on around us. People are communicating and talking and the people around them are not in the know. Before that it was the cellphone, and talking on a cellphone is a bit risky. Now it's texting in conjunction with Facebook, which give a false sense of security.

Remember MySpace? That predates Facebook and was a way for people to present themselves to their friends and other people on their friends list. This new feature by Facebook seems to go against the flow - most people DO want to be perfect in front of their friends or put on a false persona (the Internet is wonderful for this).

LiveJournal predates all of them and got it right with NOT being mainstream due to being before the Internet ever was mainstream. We engaged in what we called meta-discussion. These are some pretty private and intense details that people wouldn't tell anyone else. We always knew our ideas and thoughts could be seen by the public or read by someone we don't know all to well.

I created a mock account on Facebook once to test this out. And I had enough reason to believe there was a security breach. There are also the personal lives of myself being read, or myself reading the personal lives of others; this is a bit uncomfortable so it was removed. I use Facebook as an online account up until recently, until I realized using Facebook for friends online is a bit stupid. There are other and better mediums for it (Racketboy as a Facebook has been pointed out).

What I'm left with is a wonderful tool to keep a profile online, a near universal ID for login to different websites, and a way to keep a social presence on the Internet.

Works for me.
