"View new posts" is great for me.

I consistently get 3 pages on view new posts and often get it to go to around 8. I had a few times when it went even to more pages when I didn't check the forum in a chunk of days. It depends on how frequent you check the forum - they are "new" to the user in question, it is not just giving off the most recent 2 pages or whatever.

So what happens is that if you already have viewed the posts of that day of course it will only show a small handful of posts.

I don't think you can appreciate how often I refresh "view active topics". A list that randomly generates would drive me nuts, and in no way can I see how it is superior.

I don't get how it's random. I bet I refresh "view new posts" as often as you with yr little link. It doesn't seem remotely random to me. It's always the top one is the most recent thread to have something posted in it, and then the others in order. To be honest, I'm still slightly lost how the two links are all that different. As Ivo pointed out, I think that the big difference is that if you are logged in, it's giving you all the threads that have been posted in since last time you visited (or clicked "view new posts").

I can't get more than the 50 most recent threads listed in new posts. How far back in time does the list go for you currently? If there's someplace to adjust the setting, I am not finding it....

I just clicked it and got 36 threads. But I've had times where I've gotten 4 pages worth, just depends how long I've been away. I don't remember the last time I tried View Active... maybe I would like it better, but can't find out now cuz I only get the 1 thread. (PS, thanks for breaking the internet DSH... I know it was for charity, but still...)

If you don't refresh frequently, it will ONLY show you threads that got new posts in it since you last visited.

The issue is that indeed if you do it frequently and checked some threads already, you get a situation where you get the same threads since you e.g. logged in, but some of them are marked as having been viewed / no new posts.
It's hard to explain this one, maybe I can take a screenshot?

If I don't log in all weekend I'll get up to nine pages on Show New Posts.

No, I think I get it - I just don't see the point of a list that cares about when i last logged in since all the individual threads are already highlighted or not based on if read them (and they will have a "go to first new post" link). It sounds like if I left for a few days, came back and found 8 pages of new posts, and then only looked at a few of them before signing back on later in the day, that when I signed back on it would only show me the most recent posts since I had last logged on. In any case, "view new posts" is certainly time/frequency based and thus I have no direct control over what it shows me. With "view active topics" I have more customization and can see much more from the past day, past week or two, month or two, year, etc.

I still think you're all doing it wrong. Maybe that's why I have so many posts, I'm just reading more to respond to. :P
