Best Donkey Kong Country title?
Re: Best Donkey Kong Country title?
As an honorable mention, I just want to say that Jungle Beat was awesome. It felt like a wacky variation on Donkey Kong Country.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Screw you guys, guess which one I voted for.o.pwuaioc wrote:It wasn't bad, just not my favorite. It lacked a certain charm, I think.AppleQueso wrote:haha nobody likes DKC3
I know I sure as hell didn't.
For what it's worth, this is my rating for the 3 I've played - DKC3 > DKC = DKC2. DKC3 was rather gimmicky, but thats why I enjoyed it. What some people call gimmicks, I call variety.
Re: Best Donkey Kong Country title?
DKC 1 & 2 are my favorite and the best imo, by the time DKC3 came out, the N64 and PS1 were in full swing and it was thought over, not to mention DKC3 was off the beaten path compared to the last 2.
I actually didnt pick up the DKC3 SNES Cart till maybe 6 months ago, found it for $15 at a pawn shop.

Re: Best Donkey Kong Country title?
I just remember the huge marketing blitz for the very first game in the series, the video that all the NP subscribers got with the MTV Sports-style presentation (and the KI spoiler at the very end) that claimed it was NOT. ON. SEGA! Xmas 1994 was very good for me -- got a Tshirt as it was a preorder too!
I voted for DKC2. It would be pretty close, but DKC2 did what a good sequel should -- keep the good stuff and expand greatly on the play. Didn't like the fact you had to go grab 2 coins for a game save but otherwise the level design, new animals and that great soundtrack were much better than the first (amusement park levels anyone?) Also liked finding the Hero coins and the "video game character hall of fame" with another stab at Sega in the background!
DKC3 kinda came out late in the SNES lifecycle and as much as I appreciated the even bigger expansion, it just didn't feel the same as DKC2 did. Plus, how can you play without DIDDY?!

Re: Best Donkey Kong Country title?
Hahaha, yeah, I remember getting that tape in the mail. I dunno what happen to it, it's probably floating around the basement, but I picked up another one for cheap a year ago.
And oh yeah, I forgot how late DKC3 came out in the SNES lifespan. Which reminds me, some times you go into Wrinkly's save cave and she's playing Super Mario 64. You can even hear the castle music lol.

Asking for the best DKC title is like asking for the best way to get punched in the nuts.

Full disclosure: here is my "review".

Re: Best Donkey Kong Country title?
I could have sworn we've had this topic before. The original is a classic in my eyes, and I thought that even back when Miyamoto hated it(which he apparently doesn't anymore). It's not the best platformer, but its solid and the graphics and visuals were just astounding. By today's standards, they are very good, but back then they were mindblowing.
I like DKC 2 more though, if for no other reason than that I managed to get 100% or whatever the high percentage was. I never managed that in the first game
DKC Returns was a disappointment to me. It was a solid game, but waaaaay too hard in some parts and really did not have the spirit of the DKC 1 and 2 games at all. It may have looked like those games and borrowed some elements from them, but the soul of those games just wasn't there. That game is just an impostor in my eyes
Those are the only Donkey Kong Country games I'm familiar with

Re: Best Donkey Kong Country title?
Guess who else voted for DKC3
Mind you it was a very close call. DKC2 is the better game but I actually liked the atmosphere of 3 more.
I also love all DKL games (even the first one, no matter how crap it is compared to the other 2).
For some reason I don't enjoy DKC as much. I think it's cause of the waaay too spaced out save points, I can't (aka don't have time to) make a lot of progress in that game.
Also DKCR plain sucks. The level themes are very boring (jungle jungle jungle cave jungle beach jungle.....seriously while the DKC trilogy tried some new themed levels, all DKCR does is repeat the same platform game elvel themes).
Plus Kremlings >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> stupid Tikki masks. Plus DK is my least favorite character. Dixie and Diddy were my favorites.
