All I can say is I miss the old Sega. Unfortunately, we're not going to get it. We can at least hope that some small company (or large for that matter) has the same crazy ideas that made Sega great, and make a console. It's unlikely but, I can dream.

Right now I see the PC (with the indie boom) to be a spiritual successor of sorts. There's lots of cool things happening right now on the PC space with Steam and other DD channels that make it easy for small developers to publish these quirky games, but my interest in major titles from the big publishers this generation keeps dropping. I don't know. There are plenty of old games to play for the rest of my life should my interest in new ones dry up.
Older. Not wiser.

How can you say the PC is the spiritual successor? Many have posted the links showing how the 360 is it, and I know people will fight me every time I bring it up, but it is uncanny. Sure, the first party support isn't anything like the Dreamcast had, but some games do come out that are very Dreamcast like.

Deadly Premonition comes to mind. Quirky Japanese 360 only game.

Oh, the 360 controller should tell you that it is a direct evolution of the Dreamcast controller. Controllers don't speak sadly haha. Well the original Xbox controller is a direct evolution of the Dreamcast controller, but you get my drift.

I say OXbox is Dreamcast 1.5, and 360 is Dreamcast 2.0, but it succeeded where the Dreamcast failed.

An important note, the Sega CD was not a business failure. It sold around 6 million units and moved many games into the hundred thousand unit range. And critics thought the games were amazing when it was released, they didn't change their opinion until later.

I'm of the opinion that costumers bought into the IT HAS DVD hype of the PS2. I remember everyone raving about the Dreamcast back in the day until that was unveiled, then everyone changed his opinion and bought a PS2 even if they never played any games on it. I think that was sheer bad luck, we could all expect the Dreamcast to sell far worse because the PS2 was rolling around but having a DVD player was not the reason, it was a marketing gimmick that people fell into.

It certainly did not work on me.

I spent all of '99 dying for the DC to come out. When it finally did, I was in heaven. I barely even noticed the PS2 when it came out the following year.

I realize I'm in the minority there, but the PS2 honestly did not have my attention at all at the time. It was at least two years before I got one, possibly 3, though I don't remember for sure.

yeah I bought a PS2 back then. I was newly living on my own. PS2 meant I'd have a DVD player, and I could play PS1 games that I already owned until I could afford new PS2 games.

It actually came out on 360 in North America. The Asia/Japan region version is PS3-only.

I think Sega was absolutely one of the most innovative companies in the industry. They made more unique games and advanced hardware more frequently than any other company I can think of. On any given Sega console, Sega themselves would make over 50 titles a year with a very high quality ratio. Most of those titles would have been completely new games or genre blenders. This meant that in addition to making more games than most third parties each year, Sega also spent more money on those games on average.

Thanks to mega-corps and top ten sales lists we will never see another company like Sega again.

Really? I didn't see that mentioned anywhere. Thanks for letting me know. :D
