I read about the Dreamcast and XBox connection in a published book before ever reading it here. It was a serious consideration, at least it was according the people working on XBox and the people that left Sega to work for XBox after the Dreamcast plug was pulled that talked about it in this book: "The Illustrated History of Electronic Gaming" (I am so serious about this: Anyone with any interested in the history of gaming needs to get this book!!!)Hatta wrote:The Dreamcast has a 128 bit SH4 processor and PowerVR graphics. second time you've mentioned this book and I've been like "oh damn, I gotta read that!"BurningDoom wrote: I read about the Dreamcast and XBox connection in a published book before ever reading it here. Thanks for the sanity. The only way the Xbox was ever going to be compatible with the Dreamcast was with a complete redesign. GD-ROM alone forces this, to make a specifically compatible GD-DVD drive when MS couldn't even select pure DVD manufacturers with quality protection is just silly. Then there is the fact that the Hitachi chips are incompatible with PC hardware generally, but Intel CPUs in particular.Hatta wrote:The Dreamcast has a 128 bit SH4 processor and PowerVR graphics. We definitely have a problem with the historical possibility of a Dreamcast compatible Xbox.

I don't think you're understanding. There would be no redesign since this would have been the ORIGINAL design, but then the idea was scrapped.
Re: Did you guys know that Xbox was supposed to be DC compatible
Right, so then we need one of these very informative sources to tell us what year (and month) this original design was considered. The simple fact of the matter is that the actual Xbox is nearly completely incompatible with the Dreamcast.noiseredux wrote:I don't think you're understanding. Then there is the fact that every system ever released with backward compatibility with a previous console suffered in hardware due to hard to use redundancies. This includes the Sega Genesis.
So, I will reiterate, if Xbox-Dreamcast compatibility was considered it was only in executive offices.

uh yeah. That's what I was saying from the get-go. It was a consideration. By the companies.sheath wrote: So, I will reiterate, if Xbox-Dreamcast compatibility was considered it was only in executive offices.

Yeah, it was never worked on, just a consideration.
Hell, the early PS3's had the Emotion chips in them that powered the PS2's so it could play its games as well as PS3.
I reckon the same kind of setup would be done for the Xbox to play its spiritual sucessors games.
SH4 and Pentium III dual configuration.

Re: Did you guys know that Xbox was supposed to be DC compatible
Yeah, that is the only way the existing Xbox could ever be Dreamcast compatible. Now the Sega Saturn being modified to be 32X compatible sounds like something that should have been possible if SoJ and SoA hadn't had such a huge communication gap.
I personally think an Xbox add on for the PS2 makes a lot more sense, just based on the case designs alone:
