I have two versions of PS1 and prefer the original to the slim. Sound is better IMO. As to the question why, why play on any retro system? Why not play a modded X-Box with emulators and 1,000 games instead? Will save space and you get to play the same games right. Retro gaming is about the journey as much as it is about the destination. Old games, old machines, old memories bringing a smile and a bit of fun.
my 2 cents anyway, Bear.
Is there any reason to use a PS1 over a PS2 for PS1 games?

The biggest reason why I use my PS1 (even though I have PS2 and 3) is because I don't wanna put the extra wear and tare on the other consoles, like CRT said. But I definitely agree with you too, icemanfan, using a PS1 console is authentic to playing PS1 games. As I already said, I love hearing that load up screen. Of course, I'll make some exceptions from time to time. All my retro consoles are in the basement "man cave", but if I don't feel like being down there I'll play a PS1 game on either my PS2 or PS3.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy. That is the best game of the original style MK games. It has the biggest character selection, the most stages, and looks better than the original 16-bit versions of MK 1-3. And it is only fully compatible on the PS1.D.D.D. wrote:There are a few PS1 games that don't work on the PS2... Fortunately none of them are any good IMO. So your PS1 games on the PS2 is just fine.
But the biggest reason, IMO, to use a PS1 over a PS2 or PS3 is to save your laser. We all know that PS2s lasers all eventually wear out, and we all know that they wear out a lot faster if you make your PS2 read various disc-types. So personally, I use my PS1 for PS1 games and PS2 for PS2 so I'm not overworking the laser, and hopefully that means my PS2 will stay alive a lot longer.

Actually I didn't know the the PS2 laser was prone to wearing out anymore than any other laser lens.

I think that aside from the fact it has to pull double duty and read DVDs and CDs, a large part of it is it is more prone to getting dirty with a fan actively pulling dust along with the air through the system.Jamisonia wrote:Actually I didn't know the the PS2 laser was prone to wearing out anymore than any other laser lens.

I never said MORE than other laser lens. Laser readers in any console will eventually wear out if used; is what I meant by that comment. That's how it is with any disc-based console. Some will last a lot longer than others, depending on if you're using multiple disc types or not, how well you treat your machine, and how well made it is to begin. But eventually it will wear out even under ideal conditions, if it is used.Jamisonia wrote:BurningDoom wrote:Mortal Kombat Trilogy. That is the best game of the original style MK games. But even though I never said that, per se, I'd still agree with it. Personally, I'm on my 3rd PS2 due to the laser burning out. My latest one is my first slim-model, though. The other two that burnt out were "fat" models. It's the only console I've ever had to replace due to it wearing out.

It wasn't that -- pardon, my memory isn't what it used to be -- but from I can recall, the PS2's RNG prevented players from attaining some of the rare item drops in SotN.Jamisonia wrote:Oh wow, leave it to Sony to create a mess that won't allow us to make sweeping statements about compatibility.pakopako wrote:Didn't some games have RNG issues with the PS2 (original)? It's dangerous to play Xenogears on PS2's, there' an epic game freezing glitch on some boss way late in the game. I'm not sure if it was just slim models, but you had to run your luck by turning on the game disc speed option on and just hope you can make it through that boss without it freezing, lol. It sucked, wish I had my PS3 at the time...

This. The white screen's sound sounds like the first half of one complete startup tune, whcih is completed by the black splash screen's sound.D.D.D. wrote:The start-up sound is bad ass but not worth it to keep around.Croooow! wrote:The PS1 startup sound is far superior and you can get an attached LCD screen for the PSone as well.
I usually play PS1 games on my PSone for the additional reason that I want to put less wear on my PS2 fat, since they are prone to breaking. PSone is cheaper to replace.

Well that may be but I stand by my original statement.BurningDoom wrote:Mortal Kombat Trilogy. That is the best game of the original style MK games. But after hearing about the Xenogears glitch, now that piqued my interest in keeping a PS1 handy (or just emulate for the few games that are glitchy on the slim PS2s).
