Except for the 1996 PC release, it's best that Sonic CD be run on an emulator. The SCD version tends to have rather a lot of slowdown.flamepanther wrote:And so it will contune to be. You know this honestly sounds real. I wonder if there was any lag the last two times I played the two versions of the game via emulation... how does the emulator effect the lag though? Seems a bit odd but I definitely think you're right here. I don't remember any major lag, but I think I do back in the day when I played this game on the Sega CD.BoringSupreez wrote:Except for the 1996 PC release, it's best that Sonic CD be run on an emulator. It is actually using a custom engine built by an independent programmer (Taxman) from the community at Sonic Retro that SEGA licensed for the port. It is quite impressive; pretty much the physics of the actual Genesis games... Sonic Nexus and Sonic Retro XG uses it. He pretty much recreated the entire Sonic CD as a proof of concept to throw at SEGA. The engine is also the reason that allows the port to be in widescreen. Apparently the music loops properly too, which is nice.flamepanther wrote:And so it will contune to be. What do you think the downloadable version is running on?TheSSNintendo wrote:Awesome! So it is a million times better than an emulator.

Interesting. I'm guessing then that he used the decompiles of the original game to be able to recreate the engine so accurately.dogman91 wrote:It is actually using a custom engine built by an independent programmer (Taxman) from the community at Sonic Retro that SEGA licensed for the port. So it is a million times better than an emulator.Look up the 2008 Sonic Nexus demo for an idea of how it plays, though Sonic CD will supposedly feel just like Sonic CD as the engine was matched to it for the port.
Re: Sonic CD coming to xbla
I just downloaded this via the PSN. It plays great, but there are a few differences I noticed.
-the soundtrack WAS altered. Mainly, I noticed this in the Japanese intro song (Toot Toot Sonic Warrior). The lyrics have been removed. I supposed this was due to copyright stuff. The writer of the song passed away a couple years ago, which might have made re-securing the rights too difficult for Sega.
-the framerate in the special stages is MUCH higher than the original Sega/Mega CD release. I had some difficulty with the special stages, as I am very used to the timing on the original version. I found myself missing UFOs a few times when I normally would not have. It does look better, though.
The menu is different. Instead of being included in the title screen, there is a new screen for it. There are also filtering options and trophies/achievements.

Re: Sonic CD coming to xbla
Yeah I was surprised there wasn't a lot of talk about this. The XBLA/PSN release honestly looks very top notch, some cool new options and features, both soundtracks (shame about the Japanese intro though), and yeah. I plan to get it sometime.
That's funny to hear about the framerate in the special stages... I can definitely predict that might mess me up too since I know exactly what you're talking about with the timing and feel of the original.

Re: Sonic CD coming to xbla
I just finished it (without all the Time Stones). A few other notes:
-The final boss is animated a bit better when he rotates.
-You unlock Tails when you finish it (that is not really a secret, though). Tails can fly, like in Sonic 3, so it is fun exploring the levels in this way. Also easier to find the machines to destroy in the past.
-The ending music (on the US soundtrack) seems slightly different, but it might just be my memory playing tricks on me. The last few times I've played through Sonic CD (on the Mega CD and PS2 Gems Collection), I've used the JP soundtrack, so I thought I'd use the US one again.
-The controls feel more like Sonic 2/3/S&K. I've been using the Sonic 2 spindash controls, and they are wonderful. It feels better than the original version.
Overall, I actually recommend this version above all other versions.

Re: Sonic CD coming to xbla
yeah I love the PSN version. They really did a great job on this one, and there are tons of tropies to go after if you're into that sort of thing.
Re: Sonic CD coming to xbla
See I'm not sure how I'd feel about the smoother controls and the additional Sonic 2 spindash, haha. But who knows, Tails being playable sounds really cool since most of the stages are "vertically" very tall so his flying (assuming he can) probably comes in handy.
