So I played around with a bunch of the games that others recommended, here are some thoughts on a few of them:

Progear - I had heard of this game many times, of course, but this morning was the first time I actually played it. A Cave hori always seems a little weird, and this is no exception - but my initial instincts are that I like the setting/mechanics a little bit more than Deathsmiles. Fun game that looks great.

Avengers: Galactic Storm - An odd graphical style and, as far as I can tell, a less than intuitive control scheme. I like the story mode, as it makes it feel like there's a point to each fight and it seems well done.

Capcom Sports Club - I was surprised how fun this is. It reminds me a bit of the Mario Sports titles, but with classic Capcom sprite work. This is a good go to game for a sports fix.

Dead Connection - I really liked this one and played through the first 4 levels before deciding not to credit feed anymore. It certainly tries to do with one stick what games like Smash TV do with two, and mostly succeeds. Love the prohibition-era setting.

Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder - while the game looks ok, it runs noticably slow. I am hoping my impending RAM upgrade (from 1GB to 2GB) will help.

I'm Sorry - this is a weird one, agreed. Interesting sense of humor and fun maze-based gameplay.

Metamorphic Force - this is the (surprise) star of the show this morning - the only recommended game I felt the need to play through to completion on my first go. The story is ridiculously bad, but something about the artwork and characters reminded me of Thundercats. Playing as a guy who transforms into a purple panther and kicks lizard-men's asses is a lot of fun, and the game has decent spritework throughout. Most importantly, it just FEELS like an excellent brawler, and has very crisp controls. This stomps all over Altered Beast, which is the closest comparison that comes to mind.

I'll continue to look into others in time...but thanks for the tips so far!

The Simpsons arcade game by Konami is amazing. TECHNICALLY it was ported to a couple of computers, but that was really stripped down.

Yeah, I am leaving even "technical" ports off. I left off Truxton II for this same reason. I think the list's utility is partially in compiling stuff that could never be bought in a store anywhere.

fair enough. I'm still upset Simpsons Arcade never got a good port.

In my experience, 'bout the only thing that'll boost performance in MAME is a processor upgrade.

Yeah, I have heard that too. But I am running an Atom 330 (1.6 ghz) Dual core cpu and an Nvidia ION gpu, so it should be able to breeze through an old game - right?

Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder is resource intensive, even if it's 2D. You'd probably need more than an Atom to run it well (I guess this leaves out Spiderman: The Videogame, since it's on the same system). I know I tried MAME on my netbook, and CPS2 is as far as I can go when it comes to fullspeed, which is a shame. I would have wanted an SFIII third strike to take with me during long trips.

Also, I don't think multiple cores help at all. I tried fiddling with MAME's multi threading option, and it actually slowed down the game I was trying to run (Tekken Tag tournament, which runs 95% on my e8400, according to the f11 thingie. Turning on multi threading slowed it down to 75-90%).

I can give you more of a mix up in games I think are fun and never seen a console port. I added a video of Metamorphic Force to my last post for those who want to see it.

Interesting - never heard of this one. I don't delve into MAME much (although I'm a sucker for the original NBA JAM game and how hard it was) but I'll give this one a shot.

Now this next game I am going to suggest is not on the level of Metamorphic Force but it is a Konami game and I am pretty sure it has never been on a console it's also a beat em up but this one is from 1993.
