I think it's more that Run-n-Gun and Shmup are both considered sub-genres of Shooters. Just like 3rd person, FPS, on-rails, light-gun, would all be considered sub-genres of shooters.nightrnr wrote:Run-n-Gun is considered a sub-genre of Shmup right?
In any case, I keep them separate.
What game got you into shmups?

Yeah, that makes sense.noiseredux wrote:I think it's more that Run-n-Gun and Shmup are both considered sub-genres of Shooters. Just like 3rd person, FPS, on-rails, light-gun, would all be considered sub-genres of shooters.
I used to be more adamant about distancing FPS from 2-D shooting (etc.), but I've come to accept that the games all involve shooting the crap out of everything that moves.
...just another lost soul...
Re: What game got you into shmups?
I really wish I could remember my first shmup, but I can't. I guess I just naturally got into the genre one day back in the 16bit era, I remember playing MUSHA and stuff way back then. Always a fan of side scrolling shooters too like Contra, Turrican, etc, so I guess that helped as well.

Hey, the title says "What GAME got you into shmups"
Contra is a legit answer. Contra 3 was the first game I ever played in attempt to 1cc, long before I knew about shmups or 1cc'ing
Apparently that game even has a True Last Boss

Re: What game got you into shmups?
My first SHMUP was one of the first games I had ever saw: a trackball version of 1942 or similar WW2-setting TATE game at a Holiday Inn by the airport. A fancy thing this trackball table (not cabinet), along with trackall versions of Pac-Man and a nice Pole Position seated-cabinet, this hotel had a good looking arcade/lobby.
Sure, I enjoyed the shooting sequences of games like Superman or the Avengers or the odd tunnel game (Tempest, Gyruss), but I wouldn't say I was a shmup fan yet. (Not counting run-n-guns from Contra to Time Soldier.)
What really got me caught up was Parodius for the PCE. I heard of the game from Nintendo Power, but finally got to see it when I was in high school. From Cotton to Keio to Twinke Star Sprites, cute'em ups sucked me into shmups HARD. I still liked horizontal games (go iREM!) to TATEs, but I really great to enjoy Compile more than I probably should.

My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

I didn't get into this genre until recently playing Darius Gaiden and Tempest 2000. After that I looked up how all the amazingly expensive Saturn imports play on youtube, and I have been hooked ever since. Hard not to be a SHMUP fan after watching footage of Radiant Silvergun.

I wanna say something like Space Invaders or Centipede or that wire-frame Star Wars arcade game.
I do remember 1941 and Gradius too but the specific game that got me into shooters is a bit fuzzy~
