one option you have is hot-swap.
Get a Y-split cable to power on and both HDDs with your xbox.
Load the HDD that has the softmod so you can load Auto installer deluxe or HeXEn (heimdall's xbox engineering disc).
Once you load the disc, remove IDE cable and Softmodded HDD and insert it on the new HDD.
Now you will be able to rebuild the new HDD and lock.

Re: help upgrading a softmodded xbox's hard drive
Ive done both. Ive used xbhdm to install a 500GB IDE drive into a softmodded xbox and i bought a TSOP flashed Xbox from Jinn and used Auto Installer Deluxe to install a 750GB SATA drive. I almost got a 2TB drive but I didnt know if Id fill it up so I didnt wanna waste space.
However I never got Mugen to work. I must have not formatted the F and G drive with the correct clusters. I tried it a million times and it never worked so I gave up.
Upgrading a drive is possible on softmodded systems but it takes some work. I googled and used youtube and accomplished it.

The only way will be to install a mod chip which is not too difficult to do. You'll need to create a boot dashboard disc and then install it on the hard drive.JustinBeaird wrote:Hello not tying to hijack your thread but i have an old xbox that doesn't have a hard drive the person i got it from his brother tryed to softmod it like 4 years ago and screwed it up and the hard drive has been lost throughout the years

ixirith,
i found a pretty straitforward tutorial on instructables and am looking into heimdall's HeXen disk as an option too. Time to go out looking for a y splitter and am hoping radio shack has one...

It's also possible to desolder the EEPROM, dump it, solder it back into the xbox, and then continue the softmod process with a new drive.gtmtnbiker wrote: The only way will be to install a mod chip which is not too difficult to do. Re: help upgrading a softmodded xbox's hard drive
alright ladies and gents, i've successfully got my 2Tb SATA HD built and installed and SATA to IDE converter working just fine. It turns out my 10 year old dell (that has a IDE port) can boot from USB which is just what i needed for XboxHDM 2.2. Upon booting the new HD from the console, i get error 21. I tried loading an xbox live enabled disk (burnout 3 and forza) but it didn't clear the error. It turns out the dash is not the right version for my console, so i'm copying over the my USB with xboxHDM 2.2 my soft modded C drive that has the dash i was running on the smaller HD. In theory it should work. I'll post my results in a few...
