For all of you who have checked all your disc based games,, how many do you have and how many have disc rot?

I have 2345 disc based games and found only two with disc rot. One was Dracula SCD and the other was Zombie Revenge DC, both of which were somewhat scratched to begin with and still seem to play fine.

I couldn't find any disk rot on my ps2 games and all of those games were bought second hand out of bargain bins at various eb games stores. Anyone have any ps2 disk rot?? Is it possible that disk rot only affects the first generation of disk based games?

Keep in mind that (most) PS2 games are DVD-ROMs, not CD-ROMs. I'm not sure if DVDs are as susceptible to the rot, time will tell I guess.

A lot of DVDs have a plastic layer sandwiched over the foil. Initially they won't be as susceptible to rot, but expect all kinds of issues when the glue that holds the layers together starts to let go. :/

I went through most of mine last night and I would say around 90% of them have label "speckles" (as I have mentioned earlier in the thread). I found 4 (out of about 60) that had outright rot. It was obvious that the rot set in where fingerprints were left on the label of the disc with two of the 4. The finger prints were just outside of the clear area of the spindle hole.

I would recommend cleaning the bottom and top of your discs with a lightly damp, clean microfiber cloth when you buy them. I usually do this, but those two were games I hadn't played in at least a year. I must have missed them.

You know what else won't get disc-rot besides cartridges?

Ummm... carts and digital downloads can all suffer from bit rot.

Digital downloads have to be stored on some sort of media. So no matter what you put it on, a HDD, flash drive, burn it to an optical disc, et cetera, all those things can get bit rot. The good news is, with PCs anyways, digital downloads are easy to keep backups of. The same isn't true for digital downloads on game consoles though.

Carts can suffer bit rot as well. First off, not all carts contain mask ROMs. The rare example of prototype carts will usually contain EPROMs, and those of course can get bit rot. But I'm convinced that some official game carts also contain OTP EPROMs, like the Majesco carts. Furthermore, people will claim that the mask ROMs found in game carts are invincible. But I've read arguments that say otherwise, and that they could still suffer bit rot eventually.

Of course, there's no argument, carts are definitely more resilient in every way compared to optical discs.
