if you die at the second to last boss you are sent back a level. pisses me the fuck right off. so, in order to have another chance at that boss you essentially have to beat two levels, which makes it beyond frustrating. i have no idea what happens if you die at the last level, but i would hope you aren't sent back two levels.

For me it's this fucking game which is probably the most frustrating I've ever played:

Yet I can't stop playing it.
Man this game sucks I put it on twice and never played again.
I just can't stop playing it, I'm up to the last movie and I'm determined to get perfect scores. Plus the cheesy movie trailers are totally worth it

Everything in Donkey Kong Country Returns past the main quest. Especially so in co-op mode. That's a test few marriages can withstand. Can't put it down at all.

Same thing happened with me with Stuntman Ignition, I eventually sold it though.

Frustrating as hell, but I still play it a few times a year. Love the opening animation.

Gaiares is one of the first games I played on the Sega Genesis. It's stuck with me after all these years, even though I've never owned a Genesis or Mega Drive. I think it's a hidden gem, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about Sega consoles to be sure of that. What I've always loved about it is that the game has this weapon stealing mechanic where if you can accurately launch a probe onto your enemy, the probe will steal their weapon type and arm your ship with it. It's also pretty hard and it makes you reset the level every single time you die, which is why I'm putting it here.

For me, it's Bangai-O for the DS. The game aggravates me to no end, but I still find myself playing it every now and then to see if I can figure the damn thing out.
