I am torn on this. I kind of liked Guardian Heroes being an exclusive club.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Which ones were those?

But yeah, I kind of feel the same way as Flake. The game has tons of style, that's a huge factor in it's appeal. The artwork, the music, the characters, the goofy story, the mass on-screen chaos, the badassery of the golden knight, and some of the funnest co-op I've ever played.

The game might not have top notch mechanics (which is what it seems like you're looking for), but it's still great for a lot of reasons outside that. When it came out in 96, it was hands down the best beat em up available on home consoles.
Streets of Rage Remake, Streets of Fury, Castle Crashers.

SoF did the multi plane system better, Castle Crashers did the RPG element better, and all 3 of those had better dynamic combo systems with more stable collision. I only skim the story parts, that's not why I play beatemups. I personally found the music unfitting. The golden knight pissed me off, I'd much rather play without him but can't. The chaos felt more distracting than engaging. And honestly, I think the game looks kind of ugly.

I blog about games and art. Usually both at once. Check it out at your own risk.

To be fair, you mention games that came out AFTER Guardian Heroes. It's no secret that Guardian Heroes partially inspired Castle Crashers. Without GH and River City Ranson, there wouldn't BE a Castle Crashers. I love the Golden Knight. He's more useful than AI characters you get in other games like Streets of Rage Remake and Final Fight 3. He can't be killed and he has a super powerful attack that can damage everything on screen as I recall.

I feel that there is also more diversity between the playable characters than in many other beat'em ups. The multiple paths are done with more depth than other beat'em ups that feature the same thing and GH was one of the earliest, if not the first beat'em up to do this. Also, few 2D beat'em ups games incorporate magic to the extent that GH does. The only other one I can think of just off the top of my head is Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara. Also, the game has a much heavier anime aestethic than many other beat'em ups.

Personally, I like the game just because of Nicole. I was never any good with the other characters. She plays very differently from any other beat'em up character I can think of and is quirky, unique and funny. If you know how to use her right, she's the strongest character in the game with her DBZ-like energy blast that she can surround herself with and her healing ability

No amount of Real, no matter how 'for' will be enough to free me up this weekend. Unless you're down to re-imburse me for a security deposit, yo.

I need an animated gif of Randy M. Green launching 7 or so knights into the stratosphere with a tornado spell. When everyone is at the peak it should freeze and say FOR REAL.
